In many cultures, Saint Nicholas visits houses once a year to reward kind children with toys. Christmas, as it’s commonly referred, is a special day that occurs a few days after Yule, or the Winter Solstice.
As the years went by, Saint Nicholas became Santa Claus. As the years went by, Saint Nicolas became Santa Claus. But where there is light, there must also be dark, and so while Santa spreads Christmas cheer, another, more ancient creature had to appear. Krampus feeds off fear and Christmas jeers.
Half Goat in the Alps
In many countries and European regions, such as Austria, Bavaria, Croatia, Hungary, and Northern Italy, the belief in Krampus didn’t only survive, it thrived. In earlier accounts of his lore, Krampus was depicted as Saint Nicolas’s horned, antagonistic companion, who gifted thoughtful children, but who whipped children who misbehaved.
As an anthropomorphic character believed to be half goat and half demon, Krampus was a crafty creature with a disturbing appearance. Often, he is portrayed with cloven hooves, long, curvy horns, dark hair covering his body—though in some accounts, his hair is white—and a long, forked tongue.
A basket, a whip, or a bundle of birch branches and chains are some of the things Krampus carries with him along his long march to find evil children. Often, he is portrayed with cloven hooves, long, curvy horns, dark hair covering his body—though in some accounts, his hair is white—and a long, forked tongue.
Pagan vs. Christianity
It is commonly theorized that Catholicism became a popular religious movement because of its ability to incorporate local beliefs and legends into its dogma. So while the Krampus lore has its roots in Paganism and the name Krampus dates back to before the inquisition, and therefore may have roots in witchcraft, many modern-day Krampus traditions have been adapted to accommodate Christian tenets.
Because Krampus’ true origin is unknown, the chains he carries at his feet could be of Catholicism as a representation of “binding evil,” or it could belong to Paganism as well through witch-coven rites. Krampus, theorized by anthropologists, could be of Pagan origin since its name dates back before the inquisition and therefore might be related to witchcraft.
When Krampus comes out on Christmas, it is indeed not to bring gifts. The creature carries a basket on its back and puts the evil children in after he swats them. He carries the children away and then drowns or eats them, or in some instances, takes them to hell.
