Editorial Reviews

WINTER POEM features all new original songs by Rolf Lovland, with Fionnuala Sherrys violin as the trademark sound of the group. Featured singers include Moya Brennan (of Clannad) singing "The Dream," Fionnuala Gill singing "All on a Christmas Morn," and "Powered By Nature" with vocals by Trace Campbell and Espen Grjotheim. All music is symphonically scored, arranged and produced by Rolf and performed by Secret Garden with the Czech National Symphony Orchestra.

Honestly, I haven't listen to the entire thing yet...two or three songs to go. This album really feels like an addition to White Stones, which is a good thing. Very laid back, strong instrumental songs, on the edge of melancholy at time, but never depressing and always uplifting. I am not the biggest fan of their songs with lyrics. But, this time the group pairs up with Moya (see Clannad, Maire Brennan, Enya's older sister) for the song Dream was a stellar choice. Mary's Lament is, so far, the one that sticks out. Thought of it, as a throwaway song at first, until you figure out what the lyrics are. You will NOT hear this song by your local music station that starts playing Christmas music before Halloween is over. I do not think there has ever been a darker Christmas themed song written.

For the instrumentals, the ones that stick out thus far is Anticipation, which is very good and possibly the first time that I can think of that both Rolf and Fionnuala play the same melody at the same time. Fionnuala's Cookie Jar is so far the only upbeat song on the album. Have yet to listen to the Suite, but a 10 minute long Secret Garden song cannot possibly be a bad thing.

This is a great pick up if you enjoy what made the group at the beginning. Contemplative, instrumental songs, with a few songs with lyrics for variety, though definitely worth your time as well. I would highly recommend this to any fans of the group...obviously, but also for anyone else. Great for in the car on the way home, as you feel the stress of the day melt away.

As Hymn to Hope is one of my all time favorite Secret Garden tunes, I couldn't wait to put Winter Poem on my Christmas list for hubby to buy. I was NOT disappointed.

Unlike some, I see Winter Poem as a return to the creative joy that I felt at the beginning of listening to Secret Garden. I would have bought this CD simply for 'Mary's Lament'. The beauty of the tune and lyrics create a powerful song that explains the reason for Christmas to me. Yes, it is very much a Christian song, but rather than 'preachy' it simply states the true reason for this season with its beautiful lyrics by Brendan Graham. The combination of lyric to melody is a representation of light and dark that should resonate with even to those with other beliefs just as 'Powered by Nature' speaks to those who may not represent themselves as New Age. You don't have to agree with a sentiment to acknowledge the creative genius that goes into making it. In Winter Poem I hear and see the Irish leaving their home in The Dream while kicking up their heels to Finonnulala's Cookie Jar. And as always we have some of the gentle songs like Song For A New Beginning that leave me with the promise that no matter how dark my world, hope will eventually emerge.

This is a perfect musical card to winter. Curl up on your couch with a good book and let the music transport you as the cold and snow rage. You won't be disappointed. Secret Garden and its artists again reward us with a musical card and sense of renewal that will touch body and spirit.

First of all let me just say I'm elated to find out that my favorite band out there is still active. It's been a very long time since a full new album came out (Inside I'm Singing reused many old melodies). And just like every Secret Garden album I've bought: once you hit play and the music flows out, and takes away your breath, your soul, until you find yourself back in the real world with a heart filled of wonder, because you realise something so beautiful and amazing is real. Now I don't think this album is as perfect as some early ones like White Stone or Song from a Secret Garden. But it's at least a tie with Dawn of A New Century. I feel this album is unique because it sounds extremely hopeful. First 3 songs instantly makes me believe life is good. There are a few very sad songs as well but I think the overtone of this album is very positive. Anyway I was moved to tears (of pure joy!) because it's been so long since a full new album. And I had a huge smile on my face that lingers for a while after listening to the whole album.

As some others have said, there are definitely times on this CD when I was sure I'd
heard a particular tune before. But every time, the track then builds into something quite unique and becomes its own. Case in point is track 1 - starting as a 'typical' Secret Garden simple piano tune which sounds a bit familiar (is it doubling up? I haven't checked) - but then which builds up to a beautiful and satisfying crescendo unlike any other. The first 7 tracks are wonderful - with track 3 with Moya Brennan and Track 5 being (in my opinion) masterpieces. The others are nearly as good, and I love the fact that they include unashamedly heartfelt and insightful Christian lyrics when they want to, as in Track 7. My only complaint is that the CD seems, to me, to lose steam toward the end. (I felt Earthsongs did the same thing - losing oomph about half way through.) I know the last 2 tracks were written for other occasions - and there are moments when I enjoy the Suite (track 11) - but after the first 7 tracks, I find I lose interest in the two slower numbers (tracks 8 and 9), that I dislike the schmalzy 'Powered by Nature', and that the Suite has too many quiet sections that seem to be just biding time and going nowhere.
But the first 7 tracks? Wonderful stuff!!! They are so good I give the CD 4 out of 5 stars.
A late added note:
A few weeks later, I find that Track 9 has really grown on me!! The CD is getting better and better!!!!!
