Whether you have ever been to Russia or not you will find Andy Frecka's escapades entertaining as well as challenging. How he survived the wilds of Siberia I will never know.
His ability to bring out the funny side in life is undeniably what makes this book a page turner. The saying: "sometimes truth is stranger than fiction" certainly applies here. Andy's honest and humorous point of view is endearing and almost addictive as you find yourself racing ahead to find out just what the next adventure in the Frecka household will be.
Behind the humour is a man with a passion, a man who is carving out a life full of purpose and meaning. This book is a great read as well as full of inspiration.
I just hope that there is a book 2 on the way, I loved it!
Andy Frecka's writing style is simple but effective: You feel the physical, spiritual and emotional needs of the Russian citizens living in the remote regions of this depressed nation. Andy's ability to see humor in almost every situation helps to alleviate the despair many of us would feel when exposed to the true poverty (monetary and spiritual) of the citizens of the former USSR.
YWAM's service-led approach to missions has allowed Andy and his wife Rachel to build a lasting legacy of Christian outreach in the nation of Russia. The Frecka ministry truly demonstrates God's love for the Russian people. I encourage you to catch of glimpse of the trials and joys this family faces as they fulfill God's calling on their lives in 'Winter Road.'
It is a misconception that the only place to find groups of people unreached by the gospel is in the amazon or the furthest reaches of Africa. Winter Road gives a first hand accounting of the number of people and villages in Russia who still need to be reached in order to fulfill the Great Commission. I am both convicted and inspired to find ways to better support the missionaries doing this great work. This is a book I will definitely read again!
