About the authors

Hello! I'm Caitlin Matthews. I live in Oxford, England with my partner, John Matthews and assorted cats. My name is pronounced Kath'LEEN, for those who are wondering. NOT CATE'lin.
I'm primarily known for being the author of many books including Singing the Soul Back Home, Mabon and the Guardians of Celtic Britain, Psychic Shield, and Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom. I write in the fields of metaphysical non-fiction, poetry, fiction, folkstory and myth, as well as writing books for children. I'm known for my research into the Celtic and ancestral traditions, and the ways in which I provoke exploration of the creative metaphysical field, and how we can apply it to our spiritual path.
My latest books include The Complete King Arthur and Arthurian Magic (both with John Matthews), and Untold Tarot, The Lost Art of Reading Ancient Tarots. Books you may not have seen yet include my fictional Diary of a Soul Doctor; my writer's diary One Hundred Steps to the Grail; and The Fourth Gwenevere.
With John Matthews, I've written the Encyclopedia of Celtic Wisdom, the Arthurian Tarot and Walkers Between the Worlds, as well as the StoryWorld series of cards and books for storytellers of all ages. Our latest collaboration is The Lost Book of the Grail:restoring the Courts of Joy which is coming in 2019
Although I'm the author of over seventy books, most of my work is oral rather than written. As a teacher of ancestral, shamanic and metaphysical traditions, I travel all over the world, working with communities and spiritual institutions. With John Matthews, and my dear colleague Felicity Wombwell, I co-founded The Foundation for Inspirational and Oracular Studies, which is dedicated to the mythic, oracular and sacred arts. Our FiOS shamanic training programme teaches students the ancestral wisdom and healing arts as living sacred traditions in which we still engage. You are welcome to join us for our courses which you will find listed on our website www.hallowquest.org.uk
As a singer, I play Celtic & medieval harps, sruti and psaltery. My CDs include Deep Well in the Wild Wood: Songs from the Place Beyond. I was the Pictish language originator and song-writer of Song of the Exile for the 2004 Jerry Bruckheimer film King Arthur and I appear frequently on international radio and television.
For the last 28 years, I've had a shamanic practice in Oxford dedicated to healing soul sickness and ancestral fragmentation. I use my voice to help open the way between the worlds, to sing the soul's essential nature, tracking it through the client's story and bringing it homeward, with the help of spirit allies who have chosen to work with me.
If you want to know more about my courses, events and forthcoming books, you are cordially invited to visit www.hallowquest.org.uk.
For new readers of my work, there is no 'one book' that conveys all that I teach, but the following practical books may be a helpful guide for you to begin somewhere:
Walkers Between Worlds - for a grounding in where our spiritual traditions arose.
Singing the Soul Back Home - for a guide on how we come into come relationship with our gifting spirits
Celtic Visions - for understanding of the Celtic seership traditions
Psychic Shield (called Psychic Protection Handbook in UK) - for those who need a friendly and no-nonsense guide to how we create and receive psychic disturbance, and what to do about that, as well showing how the universe and ourselves rub off each other and how we can do it more harmoniously

Hi. I'm John Matthews. I've written nearly 200 books over the last 50 years or so. Books about many things. Pirates, King Arthur and the Grail Quest, Faeries, Robin Hood,Spring-Heeled Jack, and many more. I love folklore, history and film and I recently began writing for movies and TV, creating documentaries, TV scripts and motion pictures. I have also created 13 divinatory systems, tarots etc and have worked with some of the finest artists in the world, including Brian Froud, Charles Vess, Will Worthington, Andre Aste, Charles Newington, Yvonne Gilbert and Wil Kinghan. I have also written many books with my partner Caitlin Matthews, with whom I sometimes think I share a brain, and who knows what I'm thinking before I think it. I was going to put a picture of my cat Willow here, but i guess you might rather see me. I recently began to write books for younger readers, including graphic novels and the fabulous StoryWorld series. This year (2018) set the publication of the first in a series of long planned novels about the young King Arthur and his education by Merlin. Its called The Sword of Ice and Fire, the first of a quartet with the overall title Red Dragon Rising. Even after so many books I still felt a real thrill when the author's copies arrived on my desk. Writing so many books has always been hard work and it continues to be so, but I love the act of creation and cannot imagine ever doing anything else. I'm greatful to all the countless people who have read my books, especially those who made my book on Pirates a New York Times best seller in 2006. There are many more books to come, so I hope you'll keep reading, and keep pestering your booksellers to stock them!

- Reviewed in the United States on November 15, 2004Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI've always loved Christmas. But a few years ago I deconverted from faith; I found myself, as an atheist and humanist, longing for a connection to the holiday I loved. This book helped me forge a new perspective on, and a new connection with, Christmas as a worldly and human celebration.
Each chapter provides cross-cultural connections to the ideas, customs, and icons of Christmas. Even when Matthews seems to be reaching a bit, it makes for engaging reading, and provides the rest of us with a way to connect with America's (and much of the Western World's) most important holiday season. It's especially engaging to know the origins of certain figures and beliefs; rarely are the origins religious, but cultural and traditional. [My favorite chapter was on the Twelve Days of Christmas.] The presentation of faith-free rituals at the end of each chapter was especially welcome, and I have already incorporated some small, new traditions into my holiday activities.
I recommend it to readers of all faiths or non-faiths. Every open-minded reader can find something of interest. Only literal Fundamentalists will be offended!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 30, 2012Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseAny look around in December will tell you that Christmas is not just about the birth of Jesus Christ. As a Christian, I have long known that the celebration of the birth of Jesus was imposed on a much older tradition, Saturnalia, the Calends of January, and so on. This book did not in any way criticize or downplay the traditions I hold sacred and, in fact, it validated them with excellent historical research. It is for the broader background to the holiday and customs that I purchased this book, and I found it packed with information on the historical St. Nicholas, and the conglomeration that has become known as Santa Claus (Old Man Christmas). How do the Winter Solstice, Yule, gifts, evergreens, lights, mummers plays, frivolity, and abundance of feasting come into the picture? This book researches Christmas's earliest pagan customs and traditions. I did enjoy the perspective on the twelve days of Christmas, which emphasizes the festival aspect of this season spanning many days; our commercial society has lost the festival aspect in favor of celebrating a single holiday. At the center of the season, whether you are a pagan, Christian, or otherwise, is the Winter Solstice, the death and rebirth of the sun, and I plan to try some activities suggested in this book to mark that event. We are drawn to the hearth, we admire twinkling lights, and we keep candlelight vigils in celebration of the coming of the sun of light into the world; it's no wonder this season became forever after intertwined with the Christian tradition of the Incarnation, the birth of the Child of Wonder who is the Light of the World.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 20, 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseI have one, and sent one as a gift this holiday. I received compliments on the book, and after reading through it myself, I have to say, what a wonderful winter read for anyone, who likes Christmas holiday traditions, folklore, and history. Not a dry, "text", but an interesting blend of past traditions, and from where many of our holiday celebrations may have evolved. Loved the illustrations, and information regarding other cultures' contributions. It doesn't proseltize any school of religious thought, but is informative. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys the holidays, and who has an open mind.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2011Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book is a must read for anyone interested in the history and traditions of Christmas. Lavishly illustrated, easy to read and filled with ideas to make your Christmas experience richer. It is a pleasant walk through the history behind Christmas traditions throughout the world, whether it be the history of mistletoe or the origins of Santa Claus and Christmas trees. A rich resource for families to use in creating their own traditions at this magical time of the year.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 10, 2016I've re-read this book every year--at least in part--for the past several years. There's a lot here--mostly European and from Roman times forward, but still including the occasional other times and places, too. Poems, songs, stories, recipes, all within a frame discussing some of the recurring images and figures in winter solstice celebrations in many times and places. Fascinating for any fan of comparative mythology/folklore/cultural history.
A long section on the 12 Days of Christmas highlights traditions associated with each day, but--like other reviewers--I was bemused by the random inclusion of "snow day" as a filler on one of the days without many historical connections. Also, the writer includes suggestions for meditations or modern ways to celebrate the same traditions; easy to focus on those short sections if you're so inclined; easy to skip if you're not.
I've noticed a few minor errors, and I've seen other reviewers point out others. Sources aren't really cited, which is a shame, because I've seen enough of this elsewhere, also in snatches, to long for a scholarly work on the same general topics. Still, a fun read, and a reminder of how generations of people have marked or celebrated the shortest day of the year and the days around it.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 28, 2012Format: PaperbackVerified PurchaseThis book deserves a 5 star rating due to its content. It explained the traditions and sacred sites we see to this day. It is easy to read and relate to. The historical pictures are in full vibrant color and very lovely. I also did a book review with it to a group and it was well received. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes history and tradition.

Not only are the entries easy to browse and FULL of historically accurate information, but it's also filled with beautiful illustrations taken from cultures around the world. I am amazed by the all-around quality of this book. Usually, you either buy the pretty book or the informative book. This one wins the prize in both categories!

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseEver since I was a child I was confused about the mish-mash of stories about Christmas. What has the old man in the red suit got to do with the baby Jesus, presents, trees etc?
Eventually I managed to sort in my head the old pagan traditions from the Christian overdubs, but this book is a wonderful account of the origins and backgrounds to the older forms of worship of these islands.
John Matthews obviously loves his subject and researches it thoroughly and Caitlin Matthews' illustrations are wonderful. Read this with the companion volume: The Quest For The Green Man and your life will be enriched immeasurably.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseLike its counterpart, which focuses on the summer solstice, this book is filled with folklore and suggestions for celebrating the season. I'm a fan of the Matthews' other works, so I'd recommend most of them.

Format: HardcoverVerified PurchaseThis book is a must for the end of the year festivities, regardless of your religion. It not only compares traditions of the celebrations of light from pagan times onwards, but offers explanations of the symbolism of all that we take for granted in what goes to make the season jolly. Recipes, crafts, ideas for all!
