“Another swift-moving thriller in the Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher express lane. As a matter of fact, Reacher’s creator, Lee Child, says, “My kind of book.” And if you like competent reads that don’t slow down for a minute, it’s your kind of book too.”

“Mason Cross has created an enigmatic character in Carter Blake. The writing is taut, intelligent, oozes suspense. A highly impressive debut novel.”

Emma Faraday, new head of the ultra secret unit, is determined to eliminate all past ties with Blake upon the urging of Jack Murphy, a seasoned veteran of Winterlong and an old nemesis of Blake's. And, of course, she has no idea what is in Blake's leverage and what it may mean to her and the entire unit when she authorizes Murphy and his kill team to "get Carter Blake".
Blake is on a case hunting Scott Bryant, a software developer, who absconded with proprietary software worth millions and soon captures him and begins to bring him back for justice when he discovers he is being hunted himself by some of the best in the business-his former colleagues. Blake's sense of duty compels him to try to get Bryant back to the man who hired him while at the same time evading the kill squad. "Winterlong" is actually two tales in one novel told in alternating chapters, one dealing with the old case that lead up to Carter's split with his back ops unit and the other, the current cat-and-mouse pursuit for his very survival.
Winterlong is an excellent addition to the Carter Blake series and, as mentioned, provides the back story that lead up to his current flight and fight for survival. Carter Blake is a fun new character with extraordinary skills and intuition yet burdened with a moral code that may ultimately cost him his life. A highly recommended novel and series.
Mr. Cross writes like he has been doing this forever, a developed main character that drags me in and doesn't let go. I wasn't sure I was going to like the back and forth in the timeline, but boy I could not put this book down. I would read a chapter or two, get involved, and then the timeline would change. Then I would get drawn into that, then boom, it changed again. I found myself reading and reading, I had to know what happened.
Carter Blake is a charcter that tracks people down for money, but this book took the reader back to where it all started. I didn't know I wanted to know that until I read the book! I think if this is your first introduction to the series, this is a fine place to start. Even though it is part of the series, this can be read as a standalone. I know though, you will want to go back and read the other books. I look forward to a long relationship with this character.....
