Sophie’s character is complex. From a less than nurturing childhood to a sadistic marriage, to the FBI and WMMA, Sophie has fought every step of the way to stand on her own. In the hands of a lesser writer, this could seem unbelievable. But, Neal’s background as a psychotherapist brings this character to sharp and clear reality. Sophie’s search for identity is real. Her symptoms of PTSD and her fugue of depressive episodes are handled with the expertise of someone who has worked with and understands these things in exquisite depth.
Sophie Ang is a bit of everywoman. She has a tortured past, battles demons every waking hour, and has created a made family of people who get her and love her for her uniqueness and inner strength. She has a future ahead which is unfolding in wonderful ways. In only the second book of this series, I have come to care deeply about Sophie Ang and I am eager to continue this journey.
Toby Neal is an extraordinary writer. Her words bring characters and places to life in ways which engage the reader intensely. I cannot imagine my library without the newest Toby Neal work, which I always think is her best, as I did for every one before. Read this, you will love it.
There was a big twist in a story arc carried over from the last book, but I suspected from early on what it would be (or Ms. Neal planted the clues so skillfully, I read them but didn’t pick up on them), so it wasn’t as big an ‘Oh, my God!’ moment as it might have been.
I’m a big fan of Ms. Neal’s Lei Texiera (Lei Crime) series, and these books starring Sophie Ang are just as good.
Toby, if I could magically appear in Hawaii and stand in front of you, I'd be teary eyed and employing a cheesy slow clap because lady, you really killed it with this newest installment. As always, your use of descriptive language gives the scenery a near tangible feel- you are without question one of the most gifted writers I've ever read in painting scenery for your settings. A wonderful balance of enough detail to accurately descrIbe a place or thing without tipping over into long winded.
I am in love with Sophie and fascinated by her newly discovered inner turmoil. Disfiguring her was a shocking and bold choice but I think it will force her to face some things she's been running from her entire life. Lastly, I haven't been so excited for a romantic coupling since Ginny and Harry Potter. Team Connor all the way.
Your very biggest fan is on bated breath to see what Sophie does next!
