What impressed me most is the sleek simplicity design when I opened the box. The aluminum frame of this speaker exudes premium craftsmanship which far beyond my expectation. This feels like some kind of iThing by Apple. The genius design features compact size(6.5 inches*1.5 inches *2 inches ) & light weight(10.1 oz), nice touch buttons on the top, clean back design, especially, I am very pleased with the front design covered with perforated white grid.
The sound quality, for such an inexpensive and tiny thing, is very good. I ran the speaker through different styles of tracks that vary from low frequency to high frequency. Some tracks I have test:
Pirates of the Caribbean OST - The Medallion Calls (orchestra, lots of instruments)
Massive Attack - Unfinished Sympathy (has 'hidden' low-end 'thunder' during intro)
The Eagles - Hotel California (live version, musically complex enough)
David Bowie, Always Crashing In The Same Car (good test of mid-range detail and texture)
The surround sound is clear, crisp, undistorted and just plain amazing! It is pretty well balanced from low to high. It has a definite bass emphasis, and does a good job on both the treble and bass notes.
On the other hand, as a common sense, as for sound, this thing would never rival home theater speaker system or some speakers which are few times bigger. No surround sound effects, and no ultra deep bass. You can hardly find a portable speaker that performs very well below 50 Hz. I still like to stick to my Onkyo SKS speakers when I’m at home. Just a kind reminder…In my experience, there are indeed some guys who haven’t realized this point.
The Mbox is built in high capacity 1500 mAh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Six and a half hours later at 75% volume, I plugged my iPad in using an audio connector cord, and the power lasted another 4 hours, putting the total running time over 10 hours 30 minutes. I was very satisfied with this life span.
The connectivity is very simple and easy, it has an average BT connection range (I got about 28 feet with my iPhone before it starts to cut in and out) and it will automatically connect to the last-connected device.
I also wish it could have a carrying case included since this speaker is not really stain resistant. I suggest you to get a velvet bag for it. There are lots of inexpensive velvet bags on Amazon.
Now, The Mbox stands beside my Mac on my desk, they look so great. Not perhaps like a system you'll spend hundreds (or more) on, but incredibly good for its portability, and size. I love the fact that I can take this with me, or set it in any room of the house and listen to my iphone or iPad or pandora or other apps. It is just a really fun, cool portable speaker.
I would like to make a comparison to part of the BT speaks that I also own.
HMDX Jam Plus:
This is the first speaker I bought. Not bad audio quality for its small size, but for the 4 hours playing time, I think it’s a real joke. I bought it for $49….Now feel somewhat regretful
Portable and long battery life. I can enjoy it day and night almost up to 19 hours The sound is clear, but the big con is the only one amplifier built in, it is good for personal listening but not loud enough for parties or beach. What’s more, it doesn’t have an individual passive bass radiator (nor does Jam Plus) like Mbox, the bass is not as good as the description says.
It is compact, and for sure it has full rich sound. The bass really kicked when turned nearly all the way up. It has a bigger size than Mpox’s. But what a shame, it isn't nearly as loud as it should be. The sound is better (Maybe for the much higher price). Except for the not high volume, and if it could be cheaper, I will give the win to Jambox.
It’s bigger than both Mbox and Jambox. As for the sound, however, is a bit muddy or muffled. You do not pick up a clear crisp sound and I even got some statics once in a while. Considering the same price, you now have another choice.
It looks ordinary, which pales in appearance compared to Mbox. But I like the fact that it also has a long playing time and I can’t complain about the sound quality from this kind of compact speaker. I would recommend this too if not the Bluetooth connection issues. The connection is so sensitive that it always keeps cutting in and out if I get it to connect more than ten feet away. I'm not certain if that is due to the speaker or the 3.0 revision of Bluetooth being used.
If you have much more budget say 200 bucks, you would have no need to stay on this page, and I suggest you to get the Bose SoundLink directly, which is the best BT speaker I have ever used (maybe ULmate Ears BOOM is a better choice? Humm…Haven’t have the chance to try) But for around $50, I would definitely recommend the Mbox for everyone.
Simply stated: I really like it. It won't change your life, but it's a nice little speaker that sounds surprisingly good for it's size. I like the styling, and it feels solid. At this price point I didn't expect much, but this is a quality product. It works exactly as advertised. I use it to listen to podcasts and local radio in the mornings, and music from time to time. It's volume is limited and will distort at top volume. Volume controls are not independent from your iphone (or whatever), so you can't find the "sweet spot" by adjusting both devices, but it's a minor thing. I don't think this is loud enough for outdoor use, unless your idea is to bring it with you as a personal speaker. It sounds great in the bathroom and if you position it against a wall or corner it will increase the bass.
*Update 11/19 - I'm downgrading from four stars: I've had my Mpow speaker for a little over six months and it no longer really holds a charge. Very disappointing. It now lasts for about 30 minutes per charge before doing it "power on... power off... power on...power..." off thing. It was good while it lasted.
I'm giving it four, instead of five stars because I think it's size is a limit to it's all around performance. But I suspect this limitation is more about the class of speaker than this particular model. I think at this price it's a great product.
