This looks more confusing than it is because there are videos and instructions that are not needed or difficult to understand due to language barriers. All in turn end up providing incorrect and conflicting information when installing without SIM and using Bluetooth/Wi-Fi method.
For Bluetooth/Wi-Fi install all you need to do is this:
- update the device first as shown (No SIM needed)
- connect the device to Tesla with Bluetooth
- turn on your phone's personal hotspot
- connect the Tesla Wi-Fi to the device (8888888 and don't forget to check keep connected in drive)
- go to tespush.com on Tesla browser
That's it. And because you are using Bluetooth method, there's nothing else to do for T-Mobile users so ignore the "backend" instructions. In other words, ignore all SIM instructions using this method.
Works almost perfectly. After an extended period being away from the car you may need to connect it Tesla Wi-Fi again, but no password needed, just Connect.
Anyway, once it connects. It works extremely well. Occasional drop of the Carplay browser display, but that's really about it.
Another "plus" is there is no need to use the Carplay split-screen view since the pop-up window on the lower left side of the Tesla screen still displays and functions in conjunction with the selected Carplay audio source. So, no real need to bother with the split-screen view which has a window that shows/functions exactly the same.
Works so well that I've eliminated all my music/source shortcuts on my Tesla screen and put other functions there instead. I'm not even using Tesla's recently added Apple Music either.
Tips:
- This is using your phone service while connected to your phone's hotspot. Performance will vary based on the strength of your signal...just as it would on your phone itself.
- Do not connect your phone's Wi-Fi to this device. If you did, just forget/ignore the network. Otherwise, the phone tries to use the device's Wi-Fi and results in performance/connectivity issues.
- New tip 2/6: Forget your home network on your Tesla so your Tesla doesn't switch connection to your home Wi-Fi. The Tesla switching Wi-Fi sources leads to re-connection problems for this device. Since I've done that, I get in every morning and it connects instantly.
Garage Opener/Homekit (2/13): Just discovered when using split screen dashboard view with Waze (will work with other map apps too) that I got a button to open my garage when i got near my house and for when I leave. This is working because i have MyQ/Homekit. Nice!
