I tested the device by charging two phones simultaneously - 1 iphone and 1 android - both charged at a equivalent pace - I figured it was getting 1% every 5 or 6 minutes. I fully charged both phones (which were at about 75% battery) and there was no decline in the battery power of the device.
After a brief tutorial for with my dad, who has ZERO technical skill, I sent it off with him for his trip. He and his friend both charged their phones every night and never once did the battery deplete on them over an 8 day trip. Every morning he would set it out in the sun and then use it that night. By the time he got home, the charger still showed 2 bars of battery power left - and it has only ever been charged by the solar panels. He said one of the other campers offered to buy it off him after his own high priced device failed.
A few things to note:
The Good: It's sturdy, feels solid and weighty in your hand. The whole thing seems well made and worth the money. As for the money, I thought it was a really good price (I paid $50) for what you get. It's easy to use, plug in your phone and off you go, lay it in the sun and it charges. The battery life seems to be excellent. Also has a single LED which can serve as an emergency flash light in a pinch.
The Meh: It's not intuitive - there is one button that controls it... on/off and the light, sometimes it's hard to tell if you have the thing on or not. The light has multiple functions, which is cool, but if you accidentally turn it on (using the one button) and don't notice, then you will end up with a dead battery. The solar power will not fully charge your device battery - that is important to note, it's just the nature of solar power. It is designed to keep your device with enough battery power to charge your phone to a usable amount. Lastly, I don't like that it needs to be fully charged through a USB to PC connection, but it isn't a deal breaker by any means.
The case is well constructed with a soft finishes that give it some traction. I have an Anker portable recharger that looks super slick, and is. I can never get a good grip on it. I constantly worry about dropping the thing. It seems like a weird thing, but my fear of dropping it , limits how often I use my Anker. The finish on the SPC12K makes it a constant companion. It also has a handle, a stupidly simple device to help humans hold onto things.
It also comes with a carabiner and has built in light. With the carabiner attach it to your pack, hang it in a tree, where ever it can get sun. The light is just a single small LED, but didn't even realize it had one until took it out of the box, so it was a surprise bonus. It is a small LED, so don't expect a ton of light, but it is way better then nothing. It also has a flash function with the light. The light and charge meter are all tasked to that one button, which kind of overloads the functionality of that button, but I am guessing it made the light inexpensive to include. Again I saw the as an unplanned bonus, so I can't complain too much of the button having a bit more complexity.
I have used the SPC12K to recharge tablets, phones and even run a Raspberry Pi 2. I am not sure how long it will power a Pi 2, but I was pretty excited that it would do it. I didn't really push the system to test stability. At some point I will have to do that and get actual run time numbers on it.
The SPC12K has begging for camping trips. Backpack camping, where ounces really mater? Eh, it is a bit heavy for that, but you don't want to carry any more weight then absolutely needed. But for every other use it does the job well.
I'll probably be getting another, as it a really handy little charger.
Product arrived fully charged. I used it the first time to charge 3 phones. Worked great for that but now I've had it charging in the sunlight for 2 days and can't get it to charge even half way. I have it plugged into an outlet to see if it will charge it fully but that totally defeats the purpose of the solar charge. It's suppose to be waterproof but upon opening it you could see the seam around the sides wasn't a tight seam. I used some super glue to help get a more "waterproof" seal but still wouldn't be confident in it's ability to handle getting rained on at all. I bought this for when I go camping in the wilderness so basically if I can't get it to charge by solar than it's pretty much useless for that purpose.
