After more testing, updating the Mag II gun firmware with the PS3 update makes tracking work fine on the 360 but back to the wrong button mapping. I tried to update the cube with the newer win8/xbox360 update from a win7 machine but I am not sure it took.
1. I flashed the cube with the "1366852134.exe" to Enable Xbox360
2. I flashed the gun with "G-MATE MAG II GUN program update For 360.exe" (which seems to break tracking on the xbox360. Flashing it back to the PS3 fixes the tracking on the Xbox360 but swaps the upper and lower shoulder buttons)
PC tracking seems to work fine no matter which firmware I flash to what, but I still need to at least tap the "MARK" button once to get it to start tracking or only the buttons work.
For anyone that has a MAG II and wants to remap buttons, I finally figured it out.
MAG II Button Remap mode:
Hold the Yellow + START + SELECT buttons at the same time for 2 seconds. The MAG II GUN will enter Customized Button mode (Power ring flashing). Press together a pair of buttons you want to swap. (you can press another pair if you want to swap another pair) Press the START + SELECT buttons together again for 2 seconds. When the power indicator back to normal, MAG II GUN exited the Custom Button mode.
I think I can put it into calibration mode and fix the spinning with the xbox360 firmware on the gun, but I am not sure on the proper procedure after entering that mode and don't want to make it worse. But with the remap, I can use the gun on the xbox360 with the ps3 firmware flashed on the gun and can easily swap the trigger and bumper to where they should be.
Without the Rift though the tracking of the gun loses its position quickily so that you could be pointing your MAGII in a direction and realise that it doesnt line up with the screen. The reason is simple, its similar to using TrackIR or similar for head movement in a flight sim. The movement of the gun, like TrackIR, means that a small movement has to translate as a larger movement, obviously if you had a holodeck then this wouldnt be a problem. Hence the DK2 works really well with it, because Im using the headtracking from the Rift to control the direction of the Avatar but have the tracking from the gun set up more sensitive. (If you consider that you could move your gun in a direction quicker than your head in real life?)
As a VR solution, its pretty brilliant - my kill ratio increased in Planetside 2. (Though I do wish for a few more buttons). Outside of a VR environment, I would still enjoy it, but it needs a lot more fine tuning to get what you may need from it. With the Rift I even have to occasionally use the "re-align button" to centre my head.
If your considering buying this, check out some Youtube videos, (I might do a few aswell.) to get an idea of peoples responses.
The controller is built well and feels solid, and is rugged - it could take a beating.
There is a website that you can download more recent firmware, though it is hard to find - though a youtube video will show you the right place to go for this. (forget the box URL).
I havent needed to flash the firmware, people have reported doing so and buggering up the gun. (Personally, being IT literate, you could always reflash back to original firmware!)
