Found it in Walmart's Demo shelf and was immediately intrigued. The clarity of the sound, power and the bass are incredible for this size speaker and just out of this world.
I don't want to go into details, but as a professional electric engineer with hobby - pro audio - I must say that I did my research before buy it. As no manufacturer provides any real tech specs for any device anymore - all I have to rely on is to evaluate the performance based on my 30 years experience, my ears and my friends-engineers.
Comparing this speaker with probably 50-70 different speakers with reference audio tracks run from the SAME high-end source (portable player with reference pro-DAC) - I must say that for this size/class - JAM Heavy Metal is the best-sounding BT speaker, winning with huge margin.
Yes, I know, I know - BOSE Soundlink Mini 2.... yada-yada-yada....
Don't get me wrong - BOSE Soundlink Mini 2 is excellent speaker. But compared side-by-side, playing same reference audio tracks (I mean - outputted from pure pro-DAC, no EQ, no over-killed bass, no pumped treble, no ear-cuddling "remastering") - JAM sounds more full-rich, more clearer and with more realistic bass. Vocals are incredible, and the whole device feels much more respectable than BOSE.
My personal professional opinion - BOSE spears are good, but extremely overprices for what they offer. Even if it priced equal to JAM - I'd still buy JAM. Period.
My personal advice - go to actual store and compare.
You'll then know what the verdict would be... ;-)
Good luck shopping.
I was seeking a below $100 Bluetooth speaker, and sound quality was my main criteria. Waterproofing, color, and form factor were not important (though I would have loved a retro form factor like the Tewell if only it's sound was as nice as the Jam heavy metal). I tried out quite a few speakers, ultimately choosing the Jam heavy metal over the Oontz Angle 3 ultra. Here's why I rate the Jam 5 starts:
Sound quality: 5 stars. Exceptional for its price point! The sound envelope is very balanced. I can hear vocals, lows, mids, highs equally well. The Bass is phenomenal. It's just not loud bass, but the kind of compact but powerful bass that really grooves you. All kinds of bass heavy instruments (pedal drum, tabla, bass guitar, double bass) sounded very good. Even more so considering the size and price point of this speaker. Compared to the Jam, the Oontz generally sounded a tiny bit sharper/clearer but at the expense of the vocals drowning out the other elements a bit (compared to the Jam). And the bass is not as good as on the Jam. Just listen to Gotan Project (try Santa Maria) on the Jam and you'll know what I mean. So while the Oontz did sound pretty good for a $40 speaker, the Jam always sounded better and more refined in a blind test.
One tiny negative- there is a hint of static hiss when nothing is playing, but feels like this goes away when a track starts.
Battery: 3.5 stars. Is advertised as 8hr on a full charge. I get closer to 5-6 hours. This was a less critical factor for me since I intend to keep it plugged in. It might be closer to the 8h mark with aux connection and lower volume. If on the go long batttery life is important, this might not be the right speaker for you.
Build and looks: 4 stars. Solid, heavy, good quality build. It feels like it means business. Front grill actually looks pretty nice. Nice rubberized base to prevent sliding off a surface.
Bluetooth connection: 4 stars. No problems at all in connecting. But the sound prompts at ON/OFF/Connected are really loud and the loudness can't be changed. You can toggle through a few languages for the prompt and ultimately replace it with beep prompts which are a little quieter. But would still have preferred if these were more subdued.
Overall I'm extremely satisfied with this especially since it only costs $40. If you are looking for a less expensive Bluetooth speaker but want fantastic sound I would urge you to give this a listen. Thank you Jam for making a high quality affordable product.
•Great sound quality
•Loud powering on and connecting noises
•The sound could be a bit louder
I did find a slight solution to the loud notifications. When powering on or connecting to Bluetooth press the 'volume down' button a few times and you'll spare your eardrums and cancel out most of the notification sound. I changed mine to the beep noises with a pin on the side. It's slightly less obnoxious than the lady.
Overall a nice speaker, I'm glad I didn't Pay full price for a new one though.
My only wish is that you can pair multiple speakers so you can have the same music playing in different rooms. Overall a great buy for superior sound.
Great sounding speaker. I live in an apartment where the hall and walls can block sounds. I was in the kitchen and could hear the JAM Heavy Metal. I imagine if it was turned all the way up, the cops would be knocking on my door.
Looks can be deceiving.
Now, I can see why Wal-Mart was sold out every time I wanted one.
11/24/2015 - I haven't heard a bose portable speaker. And after listening to the JAM Heavy Metal, I don't care to. The sound quality is amazing and sounds like a high end speaker. Now, I am totally convinced you don't need the top name brands, unless you are spoiled and must have the best all the time.

Sounds great for such a small speaker. Clear treble, punchy bass. Very positively surprised.Read more
