Intel WiFi upgrade

I used this Intel WiFi card to upgrade a Dell D830 that had a Dell branded WiFi card. The results were very good.

The Intel WiFi card has 3 antennas, while the previous Dell card had 2. If your Laptop has a third antenna just put it on the middle connector. Also, the connectors that are similar to miniature (really tiny) coax connections are a bit tricky to connect. Be sure to align them properly before applying pressure or you'll bend the outer rim. If aligned properly they should snap on when pressure is applied.

I downloaded the most recent software and firmware from the Intel Website, but ended up using the most recent Dell driver for the Intel WiFi card (R202964.exe on the Dell site). I used the Intel software, Intel ProSet/Wireless WiFi 12.1.1.0. This combination definitely worked the best. If you do have trouble connecting, try using Windows to manage your connections, depending upon the situation, I use one or the other.

By upgrading the WiFi card my workable connection range has been extended significantly. I get a good connection up to 300 ft. away from the router outside; inside the home about 100ft. away and through 1 floor and 3 walls I still have a good connection. My router (Verizon supplied Westell) has a Netgear 5 Ghz Netgear AP attached to one of the LAN ports; the router comes with a single antenna wireless G. I can connect to either the wireless G (2.4 Mhz) or the wirelss N (5 Ghz) on the AP with the Intel WiFi card. Both connections are good, but the N connection seems to work better for streaming video and other large data transfers.

Overall, the Intel WiFi Link mini card at the price Amazon offer it is a very good value. Just make sure to have good lighting and ample time to do the upgrade to your Laptop.

A Tricky Detail

I bought this card as a replacement for my original internal Intel Wireless 2xxx AG, which came with my Dell Latitude D630 Laptop.

My intention was to take full advantage of my D-Link DIR-655 wireless N capabilities. But, for my frustration, even after connecting the 3rd antenna (which was quite hidden inside my laptop), I was unable to connect with my router over 130Mbps. And I knew it should be possible simply because my wife's laptop (a HP Pavilion DV6-1030) steadily connects at 300Mbps anywhere inside our house.

So, after hours of googling, I finally found an official Intel document about this card stating that, by design, it disables the 40MHz wide channel spectrum when working on the 2.4GHz frequency (which happens to be my router's frequency). This little detail was responsible for limiting the connection to 130Mbps.

So, pay very good attention to this detail before deciding to buy this card. If you need the 40MHz wide channel like me, then I recommend the Intel Wifi Link 5300 instead. It's actually a little cheaper then this card and it works just as I needed. Now my D630 is also beautifully connecting at 300Mbps to my DIR-655. Just perfect!

I gave this card 4 stars because, despite this detail, it works fine and it should also achieve 300Mbps connections if connecting to dual-band wireless routers because then it will be able to operate on the 5GHz freq.

Bought this so I could connect to my 5ghz N draft wireless access point! Very easy to install in my Asus, Just remove the bottom plastic plate with 2 screws, remove the existing wireless card next to the hard drive (another two small screws) disconnect the two antennas, install the new board, install screws and two antennas that just snap on, then needed to purchase a third antenna to get N band and now I can connect with 2.4 ghz or 5ghz on A,B,G or N band. No Problems, did not notice a difference draw on my battery! Very Pleased! Amazon does it again!!!!

Easy N-draft upgrade

I recently upgraded to an N-draft wireless router. Unfortunately my HP 2710p tablet notebook came equipped with a G wireless card. The new N-Draft provides 2x's the wireless speed over G.
Rather than purchase an external wireless network card for my HP2710p tablet notebook, I simply ordered the Intel wireless WifI mini card, carefully opened my the bottom cover of the 2710p, removed (2 screws and two push on wires) the old wifi card and installed the new card. I then went to the HP site and downloaded the current Intel wifi drivers. I selected the Intel card because it is approved by HP so the 2701p's BIOS would recognize it. This is very important.
Easy upgrade, if you're comfortable taking things apart, for about 1/2 the price of an external wifi adapter. I like the built in design.

I installed this in about 20 minutes the video that one of the customers showed on how to install the card was exact on the money. The internet works EXTREMELY FAST on B and G networks and lowers the legacy time about 5MS to 10MS per website. Drivers worked seamlessly for Vista SP1 and is a good compliment to larger enterprise networks and works awesome on Verizon Fios. Please contact me if you have any questions. This is a great card for the money. THIS CARD SHOULD ONLY BE INSTALLED BY A TECHNICIAN THAT KNOWS WHAT HE OR SHE IS DOING. IF THIS IS NOT DONE PROPERLY IT CAN RESULT IN VOID OF WARRANTY OF CARD AND COMPUTER. so know what you are doing before attempting to install this data card.

The real deal, and WELL worth the price!
