This book can be read in less than 30 minutes. It is a philosophical treatise on mental attitude. In essence, it says that golfers should concentrate on what they , and not others, are doing. Don't sweat the small stuff and don't dwell on mistakes. It's good advice, but not terribly profound. Still, it's well said and can be applied to many of life's situations.

After reading "The Wisdom of Golf", I sat back down in my recliner put my hands up and thanked the golfing gods, I said, finally a writer and avid golfer who understands the cerebral approach to golf. This book identifies how important your mental calibration is to the game.

Points that I felt were areas of concern in my own game were identified in the book. For example, I was a golfer who would allow distraction to mare my perceived efforts which only irritated me. After reading the Wisdom of Golf, I identified what was ailing my game, focused my mind and tuned the noise out. I went back to the basics, taking the advice of the book and controlled what I could control.

This book is one I will hold in high regard and would advise every avid duffer/ golfer to put on your must read list. I keep two books in my golf bag, The PGA rules and The Wisdom of Golf, try it!

Here's a great read for the beginning of every golf season. Dan Marleau reaches back to the Stoic Philospher Epicetus (AD 55 - AD 135) who was born a slave in ancient Turkey, gained his freedom and went on to teach Philosophy as a way of life. In Dan's words:

"I discovered Epictetus many years ago in my journey for self-improvement. It was about the same time I started playing golf. I remembered reading some of his words after playing a round of golf, and thinking, I just went through that on the course! That first connection, made more connections, and so on, until yeah, golf and life intersected. Epictetus didn't give concrete examples of what he was talking about, at least not in a contemporary sense. That's why I "translated" them into examples on the golf course. For golfers, these situations would make perfect sense. And then from there, it's not a big leap taking these lessons from the course into all aspects of your life. It's these simple "rules" that have pretty much guided my living for quite some time. Being on the golf course is the ideal place to reconnect with these life principles."

Don't have a personal philosophy? Don't have a golf philosophy? Epicetus taught that our lives are determined by random events beyond our control. Philosophy is our response to that randomness. For more on this topic, try The Drunkard's Walk: How Randomness Rules Our Lives (Vintage) or A Random Walk Down Wall Street: The Time-Tested Strategy for Successful Investing (Completely Revised and Updated) or A Good Walk Spoiled: Days and Nights on the PGA Tour.
