Dr. Penny Sartori is a registered nurse who began researching Near-Death Experiences (NDEs) in 1995 after one of her long-term intensive care patients begged her to let him die in peace. Inspired by this encounter, she went on to research NDEs in a PhD program, where she learned profound spiritual lessons and made startling discoveries that she now shares in The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences.
During her academic work, Dr. Sartori studied three samples of ICU patients during a five-year period. Here, she recounts the eye-opening stories of those patients who experienced NDEs and out-of-body experiences (OBEs). In one group, as many as 18% of patients experienced an NDE—though Patient #10 stood out among the others. After being unresponsive, he awoke to report he had experienced an OBE. He was able to describe what happened in the hospital room while he was unconscious and claimed he met not only his deceased father but a Jesus-like figure. Most shocking of all, he had regained the use of his hand—which had been paralyzed since birth.
When talking about the biggest takeaways from her research, Dr. Sartori shares how her findings have made her question the common belief that the brain gives rise to consciousness. Most importantly, she has gained a deeper appreciation for death—an experience she now views with less fear and anxiety.
In addition to detailing dozens of case studies, The Wisdom of Near-Death Experiences also discusses childhood NDEs, the differences in NDEs among different cultures, and the after-effects of NDEs.

Review
- Bruce Greyson, M.D., Carlson Professor of Psychiatry & Neurobehavioral Sciences University of Virginia Health System, Charlottesville, VA
"With more than twenty years experience of nursing dying people in an intensive therapy unit , plus a Ph.D. in Near-death Experiences, Dr. Sartori is very well qualified to discuss issues of death and dying. She believes that NDEs provide us with a greater understanding of the dying process and that care of terminally ill patients could be enhanced if NDEs would more widely studied. A greater acceptance of the inevitability of death would help the situation of terminally ill people. At present they are increasingly exposed to invasive and burdensome treatments even when prospects for recovery are recognised as minimal. This is an immensely valuable contribution to current debates about patient care."

A personal disclaimer here: although I have not myself experienced an NDE, I am by no means skeptical. Quite frankly, I am a firm believer in the reality of a Cosmic Consciousness from which all subsidiary consciousness derives. To me, the idea that the brain "creates" consciousness rather than vice versa is pure absurdity. By far the majority opinion of humankind from the dawn of history supports some sort of "afterlife", a continuation of individual consciousness and/or re-merging of the individual with the overarching consciousness of the universe. The emergence of neuroscience and brain chemistry as an area of human investigation does not in any way provide a reason for negating the far more soundly based awareness of this foundational realty.
In any event, this eminently readable treatise is a worthwhile addition to an important present-day concern, and the practical and compassionate insights Sartori offers in terms of ways in which new insights into the validity of NDEs can be used to make care of the dying more compassionate should receive serious consideration.
In this case, the author combines clinical research with a deep compassion for patients that is manifested in a desire to understand and provide practical help to those who have had NDEs and are adjusting to life in this world again.
There are several examples of NDEs and A very interesting section of the book that describes the author's eventual realization that consciousness is almost certainly separate from the physical brain, and that the consciousness or soul is experiencing the NDE apart from the body as the experiencers claim.
She discusses her own findings in precise, specific detail, and her conclusions are essentially the same as those of Pim van Lommel in "Endless Consciousness" and Sam Parnia in "Erasing Death" - both recent high quality books on the subject - and Michael Saboms 1982 classic "Recollections at Death".
I would have preferred more descriptions of NDEs but that is a small quibble. This book is recommended for those who are new to the subject and those who are interested in the health care aspects. People who are close to death are often left without a listening ear and people who are aware. Sartori makes an eloquent case for addressing those needs.
I gladly recommend this book to all and I want to say thank you to the author for your hard work and extensive research in this area and most of all for the production of this book to share what you know. I also want readers to be advised that you will not only gain more knowledge on NDEs but you will also gain more insight on what is truly important in this life.

I have been to mediums and got some answers and even have had sessions with clinical psychotherapists trying to come to terms with the life changing paradigm shift of having the NDE.
This book provides the answers and is what I have been looking for. Reading others NDE’s and the effects it has had on their lives (both good and bad) has been of immense comfort, clarity and relief that I am not crazy after all. The NDE was such an intense experience and a glimpse into another beautiful world………..and then you come back to this world.
My NDE made me a better person, a better health care professional and it also has left me with no fear whatsoever of death or of what comes at the end of this life.
I’ve bought the second book ‘Transformation Of……’ as these insights and answers are invaluable. I can now move forward with my life.
Thanks for writing this book and the years of research Penny.

An amazing read for anyone interested in this theory that death isn’t the end... the transition to spirit, or the possibly of a life after the body dies, whatever you wish to view it as.
It’s also comforting to think, as someone mourning the death of loved ones, that maybe we shouldn’t be so consumed by grief, because they are in a much more peaceful and beautiful place, filled full of love and will be there to greet us when it’s our time.

I recommend this book.

I would like to thank the author, personally, for her conviction and courage in undertaking the research. Bless you, Dr Sartori !
