Editorial Reviews

2008 digitally remastered two CD edition of the second solo album from the former Genesis guitarist including a bonus CD that includes rarities and session outtakes. Wise After The Event was released in May 1978 housed in a striking sleeve designed by Peter Cross and produced by Rupert Hine. This reissue has been remastered and contains a second disc of rarities and outtakes recorded before and during the sessions for the album. Amongst the tracks are various pre-release mixes of tracks alongside demos including cuts that never made the finished release. 2008 will see the fortieth anniversary of Genesis and the thirtieth anniversary of the original release of Wise After The Event and as such there will be a heightened interest in the massive Genesis fan base and associated Anthony Phillips fan base. 23 tracks. Voiceprint.

I have loved this album since it was first released - of course I bought it because I am a Genesis fan. But this is something different - softer, more sensual. This album moves from symphonic prog to pop and I love it all. My favorite? A close call between Wise After the Event and Regrets - what I love most is Anthony playing 12 string guitar - that is always what I like best about his albums. Anyway this is the first time I have owned this on CD and all I can say is that it is as amazing as the original album - terrifically recorded. Truly I think that this is one of the best produced and recorded albums ever. Everything is clear and concise. This includes a second cd that contains tracks that preceded those on the final cd which is interesting in that it shows how albums are created.
This album may rate slightly less than five stars on music alone, but the artwork by Peter Cross easily takes it over the top. If you buy it, you will love it.

I got this and "Geese" remasters at the same time. Over powering actually. "Geese" came out wonderful. "Wise After the Event" is absolutely stunning! Always a great album, this issue though is the definitive addition as the whole is heard as a single piece of music.

The production is world class, and of course that's because of Rupert Hine. He's disgustingly talented.

The song "What have you done to my little friends" has always brought tears to my eyes, but this addition is simply stunning.

I am so glad that Anthony sang this album himself. With no disrespect to the former singers on "Geese," Ant's voice folds into the music as was intended.

Superb offering.

Back in 1978, while visiting my ex girlfriend in the USA, i had one of the best experiences in my life, Genesis In Concert (And Then There were Three Tour) and while visiting a a record Shop in Baltimore, Wise After the Event had just arrived! Impressed by the art work by the extraordinaire Peter Cross, I purchased it with no hesitation. Completely different recording from it's precedor, fresh and surprisingly vocals by Anthony in all of the tracks! Fantastic, mellow, progressive and nostalgic songs! This type of albums, are a need and must in the collection of lovers of good and original music, Buy it, do yourself a favor!!!! Ricardo Otero.

This is my review of the new release, "Wise After the Event" Boxset. Wow, incredible package, great new pictures not included in the previews Cd's. and more stories of Ant¨s life back in 1977/78. You can't miss this great and marvelous item containing three Cd's and one DVD, do your self a favor if you are a fan of great melodic and progressive music, buy it today!!!!! Ricardo Otero, Mexico.

this is by far my favourite A.P. album, and i was delighted that it came with an extra CD of outtakes and demos of the songs, as well as a multiple-page booklet with great color photos and an exerpt that explains the recording process of the album. if i could give this one six stars, i would. any Anthony Phillips fan, from beginning to avid collector, needs, NEEDS to have this one in their collection. absolutely beautifully packaged, in every way. bravo, Anthony!

Wise After the Event has always been one of my very favorites sets of music, and I'd take this as a desert island disc as I love just about every track. Originally released in 1978 after The Geese and the Ghost, Anthony sings all the vocals on this CD in his melodically unique raspy voice which I like. This latest compilation is a 4 CD set from Esoteric Recordings which I eagerly bought. But...BUYER BEWARE, 2 of the 4 CDs on this set ( the 'Remaster' CD and the 'Outtakes' CD) were released in the 2008 Voiceprint 2 CD set. In addition, 70% of the enclosed booklet is the exact same from the 2008 release set. Since I have bought this music as a record/cassette/CD/CD again/and now CD Deluxe, I was a bit perturbed that fully half of what I just bought....I already had, and I now feel wiser after That event. In addition, the 5.1 Surround sound DVD included in the set skips over the first bar of the first song, no matter what device I play it on so a mixed bag there.

That buyer caveat all being said.......if you have never purchased this music, this is one of my favorite Ant collections and well worth the expenditure Once! I especially recommend the original CD remaster in this set, and the article/poster inside are most collectible.
Personal favorite songs are Birdsong, Greenhouse, We're all as We Lie, and Paperchase, which to me blows away anything that Ant's ex-band was doing at the time. Anthony did not appear to be embracing any sort of commercial success at the time unlike other bands, and looked (like one of his albums said) for a beauty and majesty in music that does appear here in droves. Some of this music can almost make you cry and the words are stellar, I wish I could live in some of these songs and thanks to Ant for that.
