Locke reminds me of a cross between Jim Thompson and Carl Hiaasen.' Mike Shatzkin.

This little page turner of a book houses laughter and thrills between its binding. Well written, Locke does a good job of of using adult themes to tell a story that is not only entertaining, but also informative. Surprisingly enough, the tale of Buddy Pancake can be seen as a cautionary tale. A tale that does not hit you over the face with life lessons and instead uses humor to get its point across. Twists and turns scattered throughout the novel make it a book that is hard to put down.

This is the worst novel I ever read. It starts out pretty good, and by the middle it became stupid but I read on to find out what motivated the evil and not obviously profitable to anyone Wish List organization. The author begins writing from Buddy Pancake's point of view and builds sympathy with this character and his hopes. By the middle, things are crazy and Buddy's friends have turned into monsters and Buddy is forced to kill one of them with his bare hands in front of an audience. At that moment the perspective switches to a story told by Donovan Creed, an ultra-rich (billionare) killer who lives in the attic of different girls and bugs their houses with cameras. Then it turns into something so stupid you will not believe it. A society of evil dwarfs runs the Wish List to entertain themselves with social mayhem, and has involved one movie star with an offer of a cure for AIDS but there is only one dose. In the end Creed snaps Buddy's neck for no reason I can see, and moves into his wife's attic. There was never any real motivation given for anything. It is not even good fantasy. Only one person gets laid, and he immediately gets AIDS. Everyone else is either dead or a billionare pervert. I cannot say enough bad things about this book.

Locke puts out fine material at a pace that would give Stephen King and Danielle Steel carpel tunnel. As many of you are aware, for every daisy, there is a patch of milkweed. By and large, Locke is able to pull off pulp gold. While the majority of his work is quality, not every effort can, or will be top notch though. Though this novel seems stretched for ideas, it does have the signature Locke charms, though dangerously over the top with this installment. There is something to be said for someone that can still make run of the mill and crass ideas readable though. Locke's vision 'through the seedy underbelly of society' are always dripping with testosterone. So much in fact it's enough to make John Wayne call him a chauvinist if he'd been given a chance.
As for the characters, I found Mr. Pancake, or 'Buddy' completely and utterly unlikable, and was unable to empathize even with his soulless supposed love interest or wife. Locke really presses another indecent proposal type twist into print here as well. When I first noticed the device in another novel, I thought it clever, then I noticed other tendencies from the 90's that are still popping out the more I read his work.
The story and characters here are drab, simply unlikable and inaccessible. To bring up Danielle Steel again, Locke does have a similar, although much less prose-ful' and far more phallic zest, for the sex sauce.
Again, I am Locke fan as much as I can be as a reviewer, and avid aficionado of what Locke has done for this genre, even bending it to make his own sub form of it, and even at his worst, or below his par, he still retains wit and has a knack for those unsettling face to face kind of moments that make real folks squirm. Even in a low spot, Locke does retain what makes him the master of his niche.

The dialogue is crude with sexist overtones, which is most likely why it's so popular. Not my kind of read, thankful I only spent .99 on it. Now that I have a kindle I can use the sample to avoid this from happening again.

This is book five in the CREED SERIES. I made the mistake of reading "Lethal Experiment" first, but enjoyed it so much I went looking for more. It's much better if you read them in order: (1.) Lethal People (2.) Lethal Experiment (3.) Saving Rachel (4.) Now & Then (5.) Wish List (6.) A Girl Like You (7.) Vegas Moon (8.) The Love You Crave.

I love his books, and yet never heard of him until I received my Kindle at Christmas. His books are (LAUGH OUT LOUD) funny, even in public, which I have many times since I started reading them and that's a head turner believe me. If you need to be lifted his books are fantastic to make you forget all the problems in your life. I read occasional pages to my husband and he even laughs, which is soooo rare.

For the money his books are a most entertaining purchase, as I've paid much more for a lot less.

What an amazing breath of fresh air! John Locke is the best author I have come across since downloading books onto my Kindle. They are fun, energetic fast paced. Enough so that there could be a movie option in the future. Excellent Excellent find! Can't wait to read more. I have read all of John Locke's books and I am dying for more!

Recovering from Locke's unfortunately faulty _Now & Then_, this was much more like it. Once again, we've got great, relatable characters, and a fun and exciting story to follow them through. The idea of the wish list itself intrigued me as a reader, and the way Locke uses it to create this story isn't disappointing in the slightest. Like so much of his writing before, Locke's novel had me sniggering, wide-eyed, and unable to stop turning the pages. This one was a great read.
