So anyway! I loved the start of the book. There was so much mystery surrounding this kinda crazy and impulsive guy the main character, Charlotte, meets, and I couldn't wait to unravel the story surrounding him. As the story goes on, we meet other people, one who I completely fell for, and again, I couldn't wait to keep reading to see how it would play out, and all the while, Charlotte annoyed me. She was so standoffish, and I get it, to a point, but she came across rude and I can't stand rude people.
At a certain point, revelations are made and twists and turns happen, and I know I was supposed to have all these feels, but I just couldn't muster them. Charlotte completely changed as a character, and it was all so unbelievable. I know, I know, it's fiction, it's not real, but going from someone with no ambitions, to being the captain of a boat after 1 lesson...I'm not buying it, even with what the message of the book was. As for the ending... I liked it, but I still had no feels and after everything that had happened...I don't know. I would have liked it more if I'd connected better to the story and the characters, I think. But as I said, don't just take my word for it. Go read. Hopefully it works for you.
Charlotte and her side kick Helen are flighty 20 somethings with no real goals and working dead end jobs. Not just one job ... but over the course of years they have gone job to job together and no end result.
Charlotte it seems has also started and not really finished many different vocational schools.
So, when this book ends ... I was a little disappointed. We go through the journey with Charlotte so I felt a little robbed with the Epilogue. I get it. Not all authors wrap it up in a big red bow but I wanted some idea of WHAT she decided to do with her life.
Her journey from meeting Adam to getting the cold shoulder to meeting Seth to discovering what was up with Adam to their short love affair to being a boat girl to a long boat journey to best friend's wedding to finding her way back to Seth again IS Lovely.
I didn't find myself truly emotional until I saw the writing on the wall and knew where her journey with Adam would take her, and them. I had some guesses when their night ended but I was correct.
The book is full of life discoveries and love and friendship and re-discovering that maybe your parents aren't so awful. That brother you thought hated you? Well, he might actually love you.
It is an awesome read and I seriously blasted right through it in almost a day.
The narrator is Charlotte/Charlie (1st person POV).
Charlotte is in her late 20s. She lives with her best friend Helen and works as a waitress at a diner.
I liked the beginning. Charlotte was an interesting character. But then she meets Adam (an artist). And honestly I didn't love him. I don't like insta-love and this part just really did not work for me.
Since I did not read the book blurb the book then took a completely unexpected turn for me. The book moves ahead 6 months. And I actually loved this turn of events.
At the halfway point in the book I was actually not sure what direction the author was going to go.
There were definitely many things that I was not expecting from this story. I did not realize that the story would be emotional. I did not realize that the book would feature a love triangle. And I did not realize that the book would be so gut-wrenching.
Charlotte's transformation was very interesting. I really liked the last part of the book. And I was okay with the directions the author took in the romance department. But the epilogue was just okay for me. I wanted more. Also the cover is really pretty. However I wish that a certain mural from the story had been on the cover.
I loved everything about this book. The story, the characters, the love, and the message. It evoked something in me, that I'm not sure a book ever has before. Adam, Charlie and Seth all touched something special in my heart. I loved the pain, the hurt, confusion, the letting go, and mainly the love forever. It makes you want to stop and appreciate every little thing, because in reality those are the big things. Thank you for writing this beautiful book, for these people and for the reminder.
I loved it :)
