Witch Ashley runs a hospital for these ‘imperials’ with her lizard familiar Musker and Warder/Guard Becs. She’s recently lost her magic and an inspection is due in a month.
In the interim, gorgeous vampire Nick turns up, with no memory of having being turned and is a Secret Service investigator.
There’s a definite spark between Nick and Ashley, and in the midst of the upcoming inspection, a valuable drug is stolen.
Part cozy crime, part urban fantasy/PNR this book is great fun, and I loved the characters.
By end chapter 20, I had a real “oh no” gasp moment and I loved that Ashley doesn’t need a man to save her. See the quote below;
“ I was the one who’d provoked this confrontation. I didn’t need a man to save me from myself.”
My only bugbear is I don’t believe the villain was foreshadowed. Guessing whodunnit is part of the fun.
However, it’s witty, emotional, there’s surprises along the way and I want to hear more about Musker, Becs and the cold vamp boss we briefly meet.
When a newly turning vampire turns up at the hospital, she thinks she can reverse the process. Unfortunately thieves have stolen the precious potion. Finding out her is part of the Secretary Service is another as is the fact that her magic has suddenly disappeared. Now not only does she have to get ready for the inspection due (her familiar had unfortunately not shown here the letter until now), curb her desire for her patient but she has to find out who the thief is. More threats are made to the patients safety and she is desperate. Can her plan work to find who the thief is even is she doesn't survive the meeting?
An imaginative story of magic meets love.
So much detail goes into the story and the characters.
I love the characters, and paranormal creatures, it fits beautifully in with mythology (Greek and others).
I cannot wait to read more books by this very talented author.
