The whimsy and wit and humor make this such a fun read. The smoothness of the plot unfolding was handled really well; and even the transitional scenes added a wonderful little hint to smaller stories plots that will be worked through in later books.
My only real gripe was the mystery part. There were really only two or three people that could have been the villain of the piece and it wasn't really that surprising when we found out. I hope that there might be a bit more subterfuge in the other books.
I definitely recommend this for anyone who loves paranormal mysteries with wit and humor.
When Jinx Hamilton inherits her aunt's general store and the apartment upstairs, she decides what the heck--I'll move there and give it a go, so she quits her waitressing job and heads out, much to her mother's chagrin. She hadn't spoken with her aunt in years, but she has fond memories of hanging there in her youth. Turns out her aunt had paranormal powers, and Jinx begins to exhibit some, too...and the store has powers of its own, summoning items Jinx can't find, giving her a nudge in the right direction, and just helping her out in general. Oh, and there's Rodney, the rat, who knows enough to hide when customers come in. As Jinx learns more of her powers, she ends up trying to solve some murders from years gone by...seems there was a murder every five years, and no one put 2 + 2 together to make 4. Handy that one of her powers is talking to ghosts. Also handy is her psychometry.
The mystery wasn't surprising, but I think this book's aim was to introduce the reader to Jinx's new world, not necessarily show off a mystery.
Wit, humor, real personalities, an entourage of sideline characters who'll most likely come in handy in subsequent books, small-town charm, and protagonists who make mistakes...it's all here.
Just enough mystery, mixed with laughter and tears that it is intriguing. The characters are really easy to get to know and relate to.
