Well, I went back and picked up Witch Interrupted, a book I'd set aside (darn gnat brain - I'd forgotten that I'd DNF'd on purpose.) When I stopped before I hadn't even gotten to the smexy parts, which involved not-my-cup-of-tea spanking, dominance and light bondage. The leads are fairly lusty but I never got a sense of a real romantic connection between the witch and the wolf, so the romance didn't work for me and when they got to the I love you's I just didn't feel it.
So bottom line on my reading interrupted experience with Witch Interrupted is thatI ended up finishing to find out how things wrapped up and there was a decent battle scene but even though there were a bunch of parts with potential this story just didn't end up pulling the parts together in way that engaged me.
The characters are flatter than cardboard and everything seems an excuse to add sex scenes for no particular reason. The setting is non-existant, with the most interesting locale described probably being a dumpster or a maybe a parking garage.
Katie and Marcus made a great example of a love/hate relationship since they were really conflicted at the start of this story. The action separated by passionate scenes which seemed to be trying much to hard to get the reader involved in S & M a bit were about 50/50 passionate/distracting, I don't need mini-scenes of 50 Shades in my reading.
The main story of a group that is trying to kill/torture them is riveting enough to carry this novel but the author seemed to overwrite this story at every turn, this book is estimated at 368 pages, from my reading she could have shaved off about 100 of those, the verbiage was my main detraction, I had to do some skimming to get back to the action with no real loss of the plot or story.
The ending few chapters were excellent, the resolution was well done, a bit of humor and surprise added at the end was nice.
Bottom Line: Great story, the telling of it was much too long and might lose some readers, sexual scenes were much less enticing than the author intended I am sure. 3.5 Stars rounded down for all the extra pages, other readers might rate it higher. It can be read as a stand alone but there is a book 1 (Pack & Coven) that apparently is the story of a couple of characters we see appear in this novel and there are enough things left to write a sequel if desired.
Love it? Yes!!!
I'm hopeful that Ms. Wallace will continue to write in this new mythos as it does provide an excellent shifter alternative that I would love to see expanded. I'll definitely be putting future novels on my 'must buy' list.
Plus I'm looking forward to seeing how Marcus's experiments turn out as well as finding out what -really- happened in that compound and how things are going in Millington!
