From the Author

Gilbert has two problems. The first is that he died. The second is that he didn't stay dead. Now he's hunted by the Church, the cult that revived him, and Her Majesty's Department of Ethereal Affairs. Gilbert must keep his head long enough to save London, the Queen, and his brassy and opinionated mother from the forces of evil and good alike.

"The Witch Watch" is a book I've been waiting for a long time to read. It features a strong, opinionated yet undeniably feminine female protagonist. She's perhaps the most *real* female I've seen written by a man in a lot of years. The content is surprisingly family-friendly for a book featuring a walking corpse. On top of all that, you've got a bit of mystery, a lot of adventure, a smattering of Steampunk, and a dash of low fantasy. The elements combine to create an atmosphere of by-the-seat-of-your-pants action approached with wry dark humour. The pacing is superb, making this a real page-turner. And unlike Christie, the author unfolds a satisfying mystery without needing to pull any rabbits from his hat.

"The Witch Watch" is set in an alternate England that satisfied the historical purist in me. Details from the royal family to the engineering of ocean liners made this world as real as the one I live in. But what fantasy would be complete without magic? And magic of the blackest sort, at that.

So what happens when a lackey sorcerer accidentally reanimates the wrong corpse in the midst of a dark globe-spanning plot? Who'll put the beast down first? The evil order that summoned him or Her Majesty's illustrious anti-magical squad, commonly known as 'The Witch Watch'? And just what does the lich in question have to say about the matter? Can a motley assortment of real good guys manage to come to terms in time to save jolly old England?

I don't usually write reviews, but I want to sacrifice a few electrons promoting The Witch Watch.

A novel hasn't grabbed me this forcefully since Jim Butcher's "Dresden Files" series. The pacing is simply perfect and within a few pages I simply NEEDED to know what happens next. I only wish that every book I spent money on rewarded me with this level of sophistication combined with such a good story.

Take a chance, you won't be disappointed.

I have followed the Author on his Blog for a while, and when I heard he had a book out, I had to buy it. I have to say I am a discriminating reader, If I don't like a book I don't get past page 60 or so.... I am well past that here (done in fact) and have to say it was a very enjoyable read and I have suggested it to my Wife... Buy the book, or the kindle version. You will not regret it (I didn't so I hope you won't)...

I picked this book up on a recommendation by a friend. I figured that it was a pretty easy price to give it a shot. If I didn't like it I was out a coffee and doughnut or two.

You know most indy writers are indy for a reason, either niche market appeal or simply bad writing. For a few bucks though I figured it was worth a laugh, it's B movie night on my Kindle!

I could not have been more wrong, and I honestly feel I could not have spent that money more wisely. I read it front to back the day I got it, then I started to read it immediately again. I find it hard to believe that this is his first work of fiction, Shamus you need to keep this up.

Engaging characters, plausible plot, and meaningful story. I feel I should probably buy another copy, I think I might have ripped him off!

Excellent read and an amazing book, I strongly suggest everyone get a copy of The Witch Watch

I picked this up because I am a long-time reader of the author's blog. Like the blog, this book has direct, logical prose that concisely describes action and scene. But the best part is there is no Chekov's Gun left unfired! It was nice to see everything wrapped up so well at the end of the book. And in the middle, the characters have charming foibles, and the alternate history steampunk setting is intriguing. And at the beginning, where you should start reading now, interesting mysteries are introduced that slowly unfold throughout the book. I recommend this book to fans of adventure stories, steampunk fans, and fans of interesting female characters.

I love finding new authors. The best part of the internet is that it gives authors like Shamus Young a voice. The traditional media may not have given him a chance, and that would have been everyones loss. If you like Shamus's blog or are just looking for a fresh point of view, you owe it to yourself to buy this book.

I have been waiting a long time for this book and now that i finaly have it i can't put it down.
While i so far have only red the first 4 chapters, atleast for me it's the greatest book in a long time.

If you like Terry Pratchett you will probably like this and i hope that there will be more of it comming from Mr. Young.

Disclaimer: I don't care for Victorian England, nor am I particularly enthusiastic about anything steampunk. That said, I couldn't put down this book, which led to me missing work the next morning. It's a great piece, and as soon as I get my hands on a physical copy I plan to put it next to my Garth Nix collection, a place of honor on my bookshelf.

Do you like good writing, engaging characters, and well thought-out settings? Read this. You'll be glad you did. Then go read Shamus' blog, it's also fantastic.
