This book is excellent for the young and young at heart. It is sweet and holds your interest. I am way past the target age, but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Kristy Tate does a good job in helping you understand Evie's emotions. I really want to like Dylan. He seems perfect but maybe he's too perfect. Is he being controlling or just honest? I'm wavering in my opinion of him just like Evie. I guess right now I'm "Team Josh" (and I hate that I just used that term).
The problem with young adult books like this is that sometimes I can find the writing, and plot, to be a little simplistic. That isn't the case with this book; what little too-good-to-be-true moments do exist did not detract from my enjoyment. Having once been a teenage girl, I could even relate to Evie's emotional roller coaster connections to her friends and family.
I look forward to, and hope there are, many more stories in this series.
Evie’s life is turned upside down when she goes to this new school. She learns she has a grandmother—which no one ever told her, though she is almost sixteen. This confuses her. The new school also confuses her a bit, and she has a bit of trouble adjusting. Then, there are the two men in her life: Bree’s brother Josh and Dylan, Josh’s best friend and also a student at Evie’s new school. The two are interested in and vie for Evie’s attention. Can Evie succeed in the new school? Can she adjust to her newly found grandmother in her life? Why did her mother and/or father, or even her uncle, never tell her about this grandmother? What other secrets is her mother hiding? Can she figure out what is going on with Josh and Dylan—does she care about one or the other or both, and in what way? How can she maintain her friendship with Bree, who also has eyes for Dylan? Evie definitely has lots of unanswered questions, which form the framework of this novel.
This is a pretty good book. The characters are developed well. The situation, though not always, are somewhat realistic. I would have liked more back story on Evie’s relationship with her mother and father, but that may be for another book. The story flowed reasonably well, though there were times when I though it could have flowed more evenly or better. I think anyone who enjoys a funny but not overpowering funny story about witches and/or the paranormal or who just enjoys a good story with only a hint of romance will enjoy this one. I recommend it to everyone. I look forward to reading more about Evie and her life. I received this as part of the Amazon Scout Program.
This book includes bits from several genres. There is teen romance, witchcraft, mystery, coming of age, and some humor all thrown into the mix. Amazingly, they all seem to mesh fairly well without any of the elements overpowering the rest. Truthfully, the witchcraft element is the weakest element, I suspect that as the series progresses and the main character accepts her powers theywill become more prominent.
I feel this story will appeal the most to younger readers, especially teenage girls. But the story won't put off any age really. The mystery is solid and the characters and pace are also good. A fast, fun read. I would rate it 3.5 stars.
This isn't a typical YA fantasy of Heroine discovering she's special and having hunky Hero woo her & teach her by chapter 3. Evie is on her own journey as she discovers she is attractive to 2 handsome seniors, negotiates a new school, deals with the shame/guilt she has about her accidental magic, and tries to come up with her own opinion about being someone who is a witch whether she wants to be or not. She is influenced by the people in her life, but she is determined to make her own choices.
