In this fascinating account of witches and devils in colonial America, the renowned and influential minister of Boston's Old North Church attempts to justify his role in the Salem witch trials. A true believer in the devil's battle to get converts in Salem and other Massachusetts towns during the late seventeenth century, Mather also believed the fantastic accusations of those who accused their neighbors of witchcraft.
The theologian's book, first published in 1692, provides readers with guidelines for discovering witches, explanations for how good Christians are tempted by the devil to become witches, and methods of resisting such temptation. The great Boston minister also provides testimony from a number of similar trials, describes instances of witchcraft in other countries, and explains the devil's predicament in dealing with Christianity.
Essential reading for students of the Salem witch trials,
On Witchcraft will intrigue anyone interested in early American social and cultural history.

The beginning of the book was difficult to read, written in the late seventeenth century. However, as Mr. Mathers began speaking about the actual trials and those accused he dropped most of the flowery and legal language. This is a very important work to read if you want to learn about the social beliefs and how this could have happened.

Mather's blood flows in my veins. My Puritan ancestor who gave me my name landed in Boston in 1632. Two Mathers went to view the famous Salem whitchcraft trials. I learned the beginnings of history in grade school texts which had been "sanitized", to be polite about it.Going to the original source is much more illuminating! I did not realize the aristrocacy of that colony, which the Mathers were, meant he had considerable Latin and some Greek. I am an attorney, former Prof of Law, and wish to tell you there were zero trained lawyers or judges at those so-called "trials", which were used by locals to get their enemies killed and seize their property. The English Bill of Rights, unfortunately not passed by any applicable legislature, were violated. Supposedly no witch could recite the Lord's Prayer, yet the town's former minister, even though he recited it correctly under the pressure of a hangman's rope round his neck, was hanged anyway. His real crime was questioning and not following the town's religion. And yes, Puritan coldness is alive and well to this day, witness my parents conscious agreement, which resulted in their children never receiving any praise, instead the kids tried to reach the parents unattainable goals and became emotionally frozen and hard striving in turn!Today still has witches and "courts" like Salem's, they just have other names! This book is a wonderful lesson in the great folly which accompanies greed.

I originally bought this book to explore the mentality that lead to some of the strangest behaviors in our history (as Americans). It is important to understand the thoughts and drive of people during different times in history and reading the materials that were driving peoples thoughts, actions and what philosopies and lines of reasoning people were using at the time teaches us a lot about the human condition and history. Mather's are among important reads, not to follow his reasoning, but to avoid repeating histories mistakes and teach ourselves not to be followers. It also gives us the education to recognize the same type of things rearing their ugly heads in our own society today and have the sense to know where it leads and head it off. Often times it only takes one person in a crowd speaking out to derail such ignorances. For his time he was an important person and leader, who are the important leaders of our time that will be classified with these people? Will we have enough sense not to follow them into such horrors.

Cotton Mather rote this book in defense of the Salem witch trials. In this he covers the invisible world and how people are or can become witches and then must be killed. It is a very good book to read in order to get a perspective of the thought of the day. The people were very superstitious and looking for explanations for things they did not understand. The unseen world and witchcraft were easy explanations for the negative things that might happen in a person's life.

Unfortunately, many Christians leaving in the West underestimate the reality of dark witching spirits permeating the atmosphere to impede the fulfillment of our God given destiny. The time has come for us Christian to face the TRUTH of the Word of God, first through the reading and meditation of His Word, the Bible, then through the reading of revealing historical material like that of Cotton Mather. This book is a quintessential read.
