Charlotte's parents are fighting again. As the oldest of four children, Charlotte needs something to distract her three siblings. June, the youngest, takes a quarter from a bag and drops it in a tree-shaped coin bank. But these are no ordinary quarters. The kids are transported to a new world - one that resembles the scene on the back of the coin.

That world is Nova, and Nova is at war. The four siblings are now thrust into the middle of this war between the witches and the animal warriors. A raccoon named Ringo offers a way home - but the kids must first fight alongside the animals. Younger sister Ava wants to fight. Charlotte doesn't trust the warriors and wants to look for her own way out.

Charlotte and Ava become separated when they each follow their instincts. On their own, each girl discovers mysteries about Nova that place their family in peril. Now Charlotte and Ava have to find one another again - a task wrought with danger and deception - before it's too late.

Laura M. Snider is a writer residing in Des Moines, Iowa. She grew up in Topeka, Kansas with seven siblings, one of which is her twin sister. Laura moved to Des Moines in 2006 to attend Law School and fell in love with the city. She still lives in Des Moines and is a managing partner in the law firm Johnson, Bonzer & Barnaby, PLC. Laura lives with her husband, three children, two dogs, and one very old cat.
While Laura's career has been law, she has always loved books. And after finding so much joy in the writing of others, Laura decided to start writing novels of her own. It was this love of books coupled with Laura's close-knit family that propelled her to finish her first novel. Laura wrote her debut novel, Witches Quarters,' as a Christmas present for her niece, who shares Laura's love of books

Wow! As an old school fantasy nerd, I’m always a bit skeptical when I start a new fantasy. This book hooked me from the start with its inventive concept. Witches and animals battle for powers as well as control in a world set in the pictures on American currency—state quarters, to be exact. The animals and setting, therefore, were all based in America, a refreshing change compared to most other YA fantasy I’ve encountered.

Also, the core characters are a group of siblings who appear to completely despise one another at the start of their story. Watching their individual transformations as well as their familial healing was at times even more enjoyable than the scenes stuffed with action and magic.

I loved this read! My only hope would be that a future book (sequel? Prequel?) reveals the origins of this rich world. How did the quarters in my pocket turn into their own fantasy world? Hint hint: Release more, please!!!

Amazing worldbuilding, falls apart at the end

Very good worldbuilding. Very original and well developed, which is especially impressive in the fantasy genre, where so many authors are just aping Dungeons and Dragons. This is really original. My only issue (and it is a big issue, but not a deal breaker) is that the characters' actions and the themes of the book are very forced at times. It often felt a character would act in a certain way just to drive the plot forward by creating conflict, or to develop a theme, generally revolving around the idea that conflict is divisive and empathy will solve problems better while healing relationships. Without revealing too much of the end of the book, this meant that the whole book built up to show the main conflict of the book (which caused the inhabitants of the world to break into factions) was all a misunderstanding, then revealed that there really were secret factions of evil characters all along, who everyone really should have been fighting. This really felt like it worked against the momentum the novel had built toward the idea of working to understand each other. But all in all, VERY fun to read. It does have some technical flaws, but I do recommend it wholeheartedly.

I absolutely love YA fantasy series, they're probably my favorite books to read when I'm getting a little emotionally overwhelmed by dramatic novels. Unfortunately, there's a lot of cliche, mediocre YA fantasy out there. This one is definitely not mediocre or cliche. Sure there's some familiar elements that evoke nostalgia of reading great fantasy series like Harry Potter or even Narnia, but Witches Quarters is for sure unique and stands alone. I read it almost in one sitting, it was so cleverly written and the characters were so endearing, I had to know what happened so I could focus on real life. Definite must read for any YA fantasy fans! Can't wait to read the next one!
