In the mid-sixties, famed producer Dino De Laurentiis brought together the talents of five celebrated Italian directors for an anthology film. Their brief was simple: to direct an episode in which Silvana Mangano (Bitter Rice, Ludwig) plays a witch.

Luchino Visconti (Ossessione, Death in Venice) and screenwriter Cesare Zavattini (Bicycle Thieves) open the film with The Witch Burned Alive, about a famous actress and a drunken evening that leads to unpleasant revelations. Civic Sense is a lightly comic interlude from Mauro Bolognini (The Lady of the Camelias) with a dark conclusion, and The Earth as Seen from the Moon sees Italian comedy legend Totò team up with Pier Paolo Pasolini (Theorem) for the first time for a tale of matrimony and a red-headed father and son. Franco Rosso (The Woman in the Painting) concocts a story of revenge in The Sicilian s Wife, while Vittorio De Sica (Shoeshine) casts Clint Eastwood as Mangano s estranged husband in An Evening Like the Others, concluding The Witches with a stunning homage to Italian comic books.

Mid 20th Century #vintage_camp dramedy: Italian style

First of all, I am a big fan of Pasolini, de Laurentis and Silvana M who created and starred in this "tour-de-farce" of mini vignettes.
Silvana is always cast wearing ostentatious Italian haute-couture which was very popular in this genre. This genre is extremely campy and choked full of sarcastic and witty one liners.
This genre is meant to be enjoyed visually and cerebrally and not to be taken at face value! ...Not for every one..
Special note: Just like A. Hitchcock, some of the directors and producers named some of the male characters with their first names while Hitchcock's trademark would be to always appear hidden in a scene or two in his films.
PRIME has an excellent selection of these "art-house" beauties!
p.s.s: This movie has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with witches nor any other type magic....simply the the art of the film

This is a series of vignettes, all starring the gorgeous sexy Silvana Mangano.

I did not know that Clint Eastwood would be in the final story, and I hardly recognized him - at first. He speaks English, and Silvana speaks a heavily accented English. How did these people get together? He is as handsome as a young American can be, and she is a gorgeous as a great earthy Italian mama can be. They have two children, although the children are in bed asleep during the conversation the parents have.

He works hard (in Italy, at least at that time, a person worked a 6 day week.) He is so tired. He mentions that it was exhausting to listen to his boss talk for an hour, the boss sitting down but making him stand. He talks about the traffic. He talks about having to get up at 7 a.m. the next day. He promises to take her away, just the two of them, so they can lock the door and make love all day ('like two parakeets') but he falls asleep sitting up after describing the torrid vacation.

Well, it's not the best acting you will ever see, but that man is just gorgeous. A young Clint Eastwood with smooth skin and strong features, with that voice! The man can wear a suit. The man has hair you want to run your fingers through. Hmmmm. Mmmmm. Mmm. Mmm.

The rest, the previous other vignettes? A little slapstick (in the case of Pasolini), which becomes dated fast. And the dramatic over-the-top Southern Italian women played by Mangano? Priceless. Very funny when you have seen other Italian films that use that drama for laughs ('The Seduction of Mimi' has humor along those lines.)

"Le streghe" è un film ad episodi del 1966 incentrato sulla figura femminile in un periodo di fermento mondiale sulle parità di diritti. Protagonista una musa assoluta quale Silvana Mangano, qui diretta nei vari episodi dai migliori registi dell'epoca, nel film spiccano due perle : "La strega bruciata viva" di Luchino Visconti e "La terra vista dalla luna" di Pier Paolo Pasolini. Il blu ray presenta il film in versione restaurata, anche se permangono molti problemi video evidentemente impossibili da eliminare partendo da un interpositivo. Un plauso comunque alla Arrow per l'impegno nel rendere finalmente fruibile in modo decente questo titolo.
