Jane Jones is also suffering. Her mother has died and left the strange twenty year old with no way to care for herself. Jane has an unusual talent. She can pick up an item and see into its past. It is overwhelming (imagine if every item you touched sent you into a trance of past events- many of which you'd rather not) and this is why Jane always wears gloves. She isn't mentally retarded- although many people think that- as much as extremely sheltered. She ends up in a mental hospital and is taken away by a man with shady intentions.
Enter Sammie Hunt. He's a crooked "businessman" with solid ties to organized crime. It seems that his pretty young squeeze took a powder after making a pickup for Sammie. Not terrible in and of itself, except the pickup was 1.2 million dollars. Oh- and the squeeze? She was Cavendish's girlfriend through high school.
This was a great story. It starts slowly and builds to an explosion of violence and death. Cavendish is a good man. He tries to be open and is naturally almost gallant, but there are other forces at work that are going to test his ability to keep others safe and himself alive. There are also hidden agendas. Who is Jane, really? Why did the "witch", Marbella Wellingway seek him out, pay for his legal defense and insist he return home to the small town he left as soon as he could? One thing is for sure. Murder doesn't just happen in big cities, and Maiden Falls is going to be reminded of that fact more than once.
This is to be part of a series but anyone wanting a definite beginning, middle and end to a story will be happy with this. There is a complete story here with a small teaser to make you look forward to the next in line. It's not necessary to this entry but I have to tell you- you are going to want to know more. You've been warned.
