This was an excellent read. I just finished it last night and I find myself still reflecting on the characters and especially on what happened at the end. The way the author detailed the various characters and the terrific descriptions he used helped me to step into each of their shoes and the college town - I feel as though they were my friends.

I would have liked to see a different ending, a victorious overcoming of that oppression. A message of hope for those caught in the struggle of being who they are in contrast to the oppression of fundamental religions and strict conforming parents that have sacrificed their love for their children to obedience to an oppressive religious doctrines.
Unfortunately, there is a high rate of suicide among youth struggling to resolve this conflict. There is hope and support out there for those who are courageous enough to rise above the oppression and reach out for help. It's out there and there are loving and accepting people who want to help. It is not an easy journey, but it is a journey that has so much more to offer than living a live filled with guilt and depression.
I wish the author had taken the time to include an afterword to this story with information that those facing similar circumstances can use to obtain the help they so badly need. The power of the internet provides so many resources. PFLAG and community mental health agencies have a tremendous amount of useful information. Many who have left oppressive religions have formed support groups for those who are experiencing oppression. For example, gay Mormons may find information and support at this website: [...] and there are other organizations too numerous to mention. Truth, love and support is out there. Take advantage of it and never ever lose hope! Speaking as a Gay person of faith and as a counselor, it took me some time to finally accept myself and to realize that God does love me. I have worth and a purpose in this world. Hang in there, it is worth it!
It is easy to authentically care about him, because he shares his human vulnerability without excuses.
It's not a book for everyone.
Let me rephrase that: it IS a book for everyon - but I suspect that the folks who most-need to read it are the very folks who will avoid it with great, hot distain.
My respects to you, Jarod Killick.
This was a wonderfully written story. Great character's, gripping plot, I couldn't put the book down. I just had different ideas for the ending. That said, if you enjoy a, coming of age love story with more reality then I like from my fiction this is a great read. Thank you.
