Witness (Special Collector's Edition)(Widescreen)
Set Contains:
An interesting 75-minute documentary is the only new item on this DVD besides one deleted sequence (which appeared in TV editions). Broken into five parts for no reason, the deftly produced program does an excellent job of dissecting how the main players were involved, including director Peter Weir, cinematographer John Seale, and actors Harrison Ford, Kelly McGillis, Lukas Haas, and Viggo Mortensen (whose first film role was one of the Amish extras). You definitely get the feeling that many of the most memorable scenes were created extemporaneously onset by Weir and others, which may be the reason the Oscar-winning writers are not in this documentary, or thanked Weir when they accepted their award. --Doug Thomas

Most of you know the story of the Amish boy who is a Witness to a violent crime and Harrison Ford (last name Book) is the ‘good’ police officer assigned to the case.
Kelly McGillis became a name actress for her portrayal of the Amish mother.
There is lots to see in this surprisingly simple, yet impressively well done tale of clashing Amish and big city (Philadelphia) cultures. Kelly McGillis is given a very ‘purely’ done topless scene while the early and, eventual, showdown violence is stunning to nothing short of shocking (see first victim, especially).
The Pennsylvania Amish landscape is a calming visual plus eventually giving the viewer the sense/realization you’re watching a modern day western.
Some natural, real life humor is thrown in: Ford as Book says ‘Now THAT’s good coffee!’ After receiving blank stairs from the Amish family he slowly explains while realizing why they have NO idea what the heck he’s talking about: ‘It’s a tv commercial…you don’t have tv…don’t have electricity…’. Never mind😅
well my simple sense of humor chuckles every time I see it
Anyways 🙃
Real good movie.
My Paramount Pictures release is widescreen from 2017. Two hours long and worth every frame.
Witness was originally released 1985.
Alexander Gudonov (Die Hard; The Money Pit) has important part as a competitive Amish ‘suitor’. Viggo Mortensen pops up, almost unrecognizable as an Amish neighbor.
As for the die hard film fans I can’t see why the 5 part documentary Between Two Worlds would not be a plus. I didn’t watch all of the doc yet, but these usually seem to run at approximately 20 minute Making Of segments.
Not 5 stars because I do have to admit a problem with THE Main Premise of the movie: how did those bad guys not hear or find the Witness? But, wouldn’t be the same movie without the elusive little tyke. Didn’t even lose his hat.
4.8 stars
Rachel who is recently widowed takes her young son, Samuel, by train to Baltimore to visit her sister. They are compelled to wait in the train station for their train whereupon Samuel has to use the restroom. He goes into the cubicle, but he can see through the door. There is a man at the wash basin. Two more men come in. One pulls a bag over the man's head at the sink and then knifes him. Samuel witnesses the murder and clearly sees one man who did the murder. The murderer, McFee, played by Danny Glover, decides to check every cubicle. Samuel locks his cubicle. When McFee comes to Samuel's cubicle, Samuel cleverly slips to the next cubicle which had been cleared and stands on the toilet. When McFeee smashes through the locked cubicle that Samuel had been in, it was empty.
John Book played by Harrison Ford is assigned to investigate the murder. He detains Rachel and Samuel and has Samuel view a lineup and look at mug shots. While Book is on the phone, Samuel walks around the squad room and looks at a trophy case in which there is a clipping of a cop who had been honored for some bravery. Book notices Samuel staring intently at the trophy case. He goes to him and the boy points to the clipping photo of McFee. Book puts his hand on the boy's finger. Hood goes to his superior and tells him it is McFee. Later that night he is accosted by McFee in his underground garage by McFee and a firefight ensues. Book is hit..
Book gets Rachel and Samuel from his sister's house where they had been staying and brings them to the safety of the Amish. Rachel, her father and some of the Amish men nurse him back to health.
In one scene as John Book lives among the Amish, Harrison Ford helps the Amish men build a barn. He authentically goes about working with hammer, nails, studs and dowels. It is understandable since Harrison Ford was a carpenter before he was an actor.
The glimpse into the life of the Amish is interesting.
Harrison Ford is outstanding as John Book. Kelly McGillis is also outstanding as Rachel. Lukas Haas as Samuel is a fine young actor. Danny Glover as the corrupt cop is very good. Patti LuPone who is in a few short scenes as Harrison Ford's sister is very good. Viggo Mortensen as one of the Amish barn builders is young and handsome. The supporting cast is excellent.
