The innocent are always the greatest victims in any war. To throw the children and youth into battle at the last minute against overwhelming odds only follows the cruel and selfishness of the Nazi party. Informative and objectively written.

A moving book that will, definitely, make you cry, make you think, and tune you in to the suffering of the people considered "collateral damage" in any war effort. This one is heartbreaking and well worth reading.

When I first tackled this book I was at first disappointed in the deap depth of the detail given by the author. It seemed like more detail than was needed. I was determined to push through the details. It paid off for me when I reached the chapters that covered the period after the defeat of the Nazis. The detail gave me the understanding of how the German people suddenly flip-flopped and then blamed the Nazis for their problems without much self examination of the individuals own role in the unbridled support they gave to the Nazis. This insight was very real for me because the book contains quotes from journals, diary notes, letters, and personal reports of the people who were diehard supporters of the Nazis. The author has demonstrated the tenacious perseverance to get to the feelings and thoughts of the people that supported the Nazis. It is very insightful to realize how brainwashed the Germans had become. The idea of blaming the bombing of their cities on the Americans who were tools of the Jews because the Germans had not bombed any cities in the USA. It only leads to the conclusion that the Germans did not think for themselves but were sponges to absorb the propaganda of their regime. Wow!!! How could such smart people be so stupid??

The book is not an easy read in the sense that it is difficult to comprehend the evil of the Hitler era in Germany. The story needed to be told, but it is a sad and difficult narrative. I was most impressed early on in the book about a girl indoctrinated with Nazi propaganda carries her beliefs long past Germany's defeat, even while her father, a card-carrying Nazi party member, adapts to the post war world.

a veryinteresting and new slant on the horrors of world war 2. I was in the Hitler youth at age five , luckly my parents got me out of there in 19 34,or I probably would now not exist. je

I had just read the author's "The German War"and found this repetitive in some ways. Both are excellent reads as one tries to understand the German psychological delemma of that time.

Mr. Stargardt brilliantly explores how Nazi rule affected the lives of children of all nationalities in wartime Europe during WWII. Through extensive research, the author shows how children thought and acted when faced with horrific experiences. Great historical writing and not a dull paragraph therein.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best book ever.

One of the best books I have ever read about children's lives in WW2 . Harrowing to read but a great piece of history. I had a good cry a few times at the suffering children had to go through. I also admired many of the children for their courage as many of them had to take over the adult role and take care of their families. The plight of the Jewish children in the Warsaw Ghetto gave me sleepless nights

Although I read this after reading Stargardt's The German War, I found it extremely informative, moving and compelling. You may find a bit of overlap with The German War, but because the focus is different, it is more interesting, not less so. This book is well written, intelligent and compassionate. Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars ... experienced as a result of Nazi policies and the terrible ferocity of the war

Stargardt takes the reader to WW2 Germany and German occupied territories and lets him witness what the children experienced as a result of Nazi policies and the terrible ferocity of the war. Much of what he has to say about the treatment of children especially, and civilians in Germany generally in the first few years of the war, will surprise many readers. For students of WW2, this is a good gap filler.
