Far Out!

Great debut novel! Wives of Lucifer grabbed me from the start, unlike any book I've ever read, especially being an avid historical fiction reader. McGill delves into heavenly planes, surprisingly witty and humorous at times, then deep into darkness, and the contrast is a wild roller coaster of a ride. Her terrific stretch of imagination comes across realistically and smoothly due to the author's scientific background. Lines like "dropped into a vat of liquid sunshine" and "... dead babies that dissolved into liquid metal ... like tiny silver balls ricocheting inside a pinball machine" are examples of her energetic, playful wording. And the s-e-x scene made me want to Light Up! afterward (even though I don't smoke). This was a true reading adventure in the cycle of life and death, and made me come to the conclusion that the author lived another lifetime far away and long ago.

The incredibly rich worlds Caryn McGill created are a perfect match for this paranormal suspense. I think the New Adult audience is going to love it! A spunky, if flawed, heroine to root for. An ensemble cast to play off her strengths and limitations. Memorable and strong characters on the dark side. What's not to love? You've never seen hell like this before. And the Astral Plane is thoroughly described. One felt as if one were wandering the grounds with the souls waiting to be reborn or re-purposed. Great debut novel, Ms. McGill. When can I read the sequel?

It's hard to believe they're dead! Her stunning imagery, particularly of Chrism Center where souls of babies are recycled, will never leave me. A GREAT read!

Cute, quirky, debut novel

Let me start, quickly, as to how this book came into my possession - especially since it doesn't really fit into my usual reading mix. I came home from work one night to find a package in my mailbox. I hadn't ordered anything recently, so I was curious. When I opened the package and saw the title, I was confused; and when I opened the book to find it inscribed to me, well, I was thoroughly gobsmacked. I didn't recognize the author, and I don't think I accidentally entered a contest for a book called The Wives of Lucifer - truthfully, it sounded like a book my wife would read, you know an "E. L. James" type. To the Google (as my friend would say). Still nothing shed light on where this book came from. Then I checked Caryn's FaceBook page - and there it was - a friend (actually a teacher) of a very dear friend of mine, who made the request to have the book sent. Mystery solved.

So of course, I had to give it a read.

While it isn't part of my wheelhouse, I found it to be an enjoyable read, especially for a debut novel. Caryn basically created a "school for angels", akin to Hogwarts for wizards. Olivia finds herself part of something bigger than that, marked as one of Lucifer's wives, but with a secret purpose keeping her in "heaven" (although that word is not used at all in the book).

Part romance, part fantasy, part theology, and a bit erotica (not a huge, overbearing amount), makes this a well-rounded story. While the audience, in my opinion, would be more YA, if you're looking for an interesting, quirky, well-written story, give it a try. Just know that the story doesn't end, and there are a lot of unanswered questions - which I can only assume will be answered in Caryn's next novel.

Love on the Astral Plain?

Rather than calling The Wives of Lucifer a straight romance, I would classify this extremely entertaining read as an epic fantasy with romantic elements. It does have a bit of romance and some spicy scenes, but the heart of the book lies in its author’s creation of a whole new world. I so love books that can create an entire vista for you—think J.D.Robb’s In Death futuristic series, and Harry Potter’s school. Caryn McGill has imagined what life after death might look and feel like and she paints a vivid picture for her readers.
The book’s heroine, Olivia, an unwitting chosen one, died at a young age and in death retains her youthful rebellious spirit. She discovers her special powers as the book goes on which is as exciting for the reader as it is for her. That’s another plus in The Wives of Lucifer. The book is not predictable. It grabbed my interest from the first page largely because of this.
I highly recommend this book, but be warned! This is book one in a series. You’ll have to wait for future novels to find out how the battle between good and evil plays out.

Entertaining Debut **(4.25 STARS)**

I found this debut novel delightful, it was witty, entertaining and at times funny. The author has done an amazing job with world building on the Astral Plane and I feel sure that it will offend some readers that will over analyze, forgetting that it is fiction that is meant to entertain us. I look forward to the sequel.
