Abel is an ex-junkie, still fighting that terrible ‘pull’ with the supportive companionship of his dog Pip. He teams up with an older black ‘magician,’ a real shyster, but as they only score an occasional free meal for putting on a show, there’s no great harm done.
The villains of the piece are the ‘Family:’ drug dealers who trap, kidnap and addict children they then sell into slavery. Abel becomes consumed by the need to save the kids and the pair make three unsuccessful attempts before being badly beaten and almost killed, but in the end Abel makes it and is vindicated, though sadly, he loses Pip.
Although writing wholly in the present tense, which I usually dislike, this is one well-prepared author, with a strong support team and an editor who has done her job well. I caught only 3 errors: an extraneous ‘the’ and missing ‘to’ and ‘of’.
The equally good free prequel novella Addict of the Wasteland is only available by subscribing to the author’s newsletter. It tells the harrowing story of the addict’s getting clean and meeting his dog. It has only 2 errors.
WIZARD OF THE WASTELAND
A generation past the end of the world as we know it finds Alan and his dog Pip ranging the country trading pre-apocalyptic trash and such for food and a means to survive. One day he meets the “Wizard of the Wasteland” and both their life changes. They decide to combine their talents and travel together.
This reminds me a little of a cross between THE ROAD and THE STAND. If you like action, emotion and stories of survival you will love this book. It will hold your interest from the first word and I dare you to put it down before the last word. I loved it and would recommend this book to anyone.
I most certainly enjoyed listening to Wizard of the Wasteland, but at the end I pondered if the author intentionally left out details regarding the cause of the world's downturn so that perhaps the reader could identify with the book's characters, who themselves seemed to have difficulty remembering those long-passed events. Narrator Ian Coleman provides a terrific performance and lends a fitting voice to the tone of the story. Overall, I found Wizard of the Wasteland to be pretty good!
I was provided a free copy of this audiobook in exchange for my unbiased review. Many thanks to the author for this opportunity!
Here is my original review for the first in series, with a few more words added on.
Such great characters. I was fascinated from the get-go. Also, a very interesting style of writing. Can't wait to read book two in the series.
Would like to add that book two as as good, if not better than the first. I am so looking forward to the third in series, which will be released on 11/2. On my birthday, no less!
I borrowed this book via Kindle Unlimited.
