Jake grew up different, with a secret no one would understand. He finds missing people, most times too late, and the cops are suspicious. He rescues Jenny just in time and his world starts to change. Hi, my name is John and I am a writer. That's a bit like being an alcoholic, but we writers write alone and don't disturb the neighbours.

I live in England. Most of my stories are set there.

I have two grown up daughters and a young grandchild. My wife and I share our house with our youngest daughter and two cats. Well actually the two cats graciously allow us residence provided we feed them regularly.

I've been writing for a few years now. At times I thought I was writing great works, but actually I always write to entertain. I think a book should give you hours of entertainment, make you laugh, get you excited, maybe make you cry. That's what I try to do in every book I write, but it isn't high art.

There are twenty-odd books of mine on here. I have a few in reserve and a lot of short stories, but what I intend to do from now on is publish two to three newly written books every year. So if you enjoy my books, check back regularly for new ones. I guarantee you will get value for your money.

I write because I find it fun. I also get a kick out of others enjoying my stories. What could possibly be better than that?

A fast, magical read to steal you away for an afternoon

What lends great authenticity to the characters in Wizards is their observation and commentary. Jake Morrissey, a seventeen-year-old wizard, is as baffled by his magic as he is by the opposite sex. Through the course of this fast-paced skip through various places-of-interest in the multiverse, Jake learns to understand both. Well, sort of. He gets the magic down. Wizards is a fun read, a light read, with a splash of sex and a hearty serving of male teen frustration that serves the story as well as it serves Jake's character arc. While reading, I wanted the author to pause and explore more of what makes Jake tick, and more fully realize the potential for his character to reflect and learn from the challenges he overcomes. I look forward to that in the sequel. Finally, we can all learn something from the way Jake chooses to use (and not abuse) his power. As you read this novel, he and his dragon Fluffy will steal you away to another world. Recommended.

A wizard, a hapless loser, a young adult, with an emphasis on adult

A lighthearted story of a boy wizard with a dragon named Fluffy having fantastical adventures through playing hopscotch this is not. This is less similar to 'Harry Potter' and more to 'Odd Thomas' or 'Scott Pilgrim.' As with those, Jake is a young adult, with an emphasis on adult, and a hapless loser who resolves bizarre situations with his special powers. Contrary to other reviews, this book is not for children as it does have sex and sexuality, abuse and violence, and even deals with child rape. That being said, once I started reading and got into it, it was a page-turner. It starts as a collection of short stories introducing you to this character and his world and the second half is a more congruous adventure. It does feel like a teen narrating to the point that it feels like a teen wrote it. Although ending abruptly and unresolved, it does leave you expecting a sequel. An easy and fun read, I read it straight through.

I thoroughly enjoyed John Booth's interpretation of wizards and their magical powers in "Wizards." The characters in this book are interesting, particularly the main character, Jake. And the inclusion of a dragon as a pet/friend adds more spice to the story.

That being said, I find it disturbing (for a lack of better word) that wizards in this book are practically omnipotent, with their magical powers basically limited by their imaginations. Indeed, the author often uses the wizard's girlfriend, Jenny, to force Jake to explore his perceived limits of his magical abilities. Once Jake starts going beyond his original limits, the story becomes stale and less interesting.

Okay, I like serious books that tell a straight forward story. Wizards is a fun read which is why it got 3 stars. It ignores the one for foot step in front of the other that I prefer, which is why it ONLY got 3 stars.
It's told in first person, which seems to be standard now for urban fantasy, and tells the story of a teenager trying to get by in life after high school. Several months of his life as if he's talking to a diary. Rather then the mission oriented books of the Dresden files.
But despite the diary style, it's people and their reactions are very realistic. (If you happen to be an all powerful teenage wizard living in Wales with your buddy Fluffy the Dragon)

Wizards is a typical candy-bar book. Amazon's summary describes it as Harry Potter without Hogwarts or other wizards, which is pretty accurate. The main character has always known he has powers but does not think too much of it, other than to keep them a secret from adults. He has no wizards or books to learn from, so stumbles along on his own making some niavee mistakes along the way.

Wizards is a simple book. The protagonist casts whatever spells he can think of without training or study, and easily over powers enemy wizards. Girls fall for him instantly, and a prophecy states that he will save the multiverse. It's Harry Potter on god mode.

The kindle version as of this writing also has editing errors. Small stuff like misusing 'too', dropping the 'y' off the end of an adjective, or mispelling words. Not bad enough to jar you out of the story, but annoying.

Despite its flaws, Wizards is a fun, quick read. If you want to throw away an afternoon reading juvenile escape-ism fantasy, Wizards does the job. I'll probably even buy the sequel whenever it comes out. Sucker that I am.

I enjoyed this story very much indeed. It is a charming and light hearted romp, the dangers never sending chills, and the awkward hero is totally engaging.
Technically, there were some awkward spots, as 1st person Jake collided with 3rd person Jenny, and there were just a few minor typos, but never enough to spoil my enjoyment. I think it could be improved by making all characters 3rd person - mixing 1st and 3rd person never really works well, especially when the timeline overlaps.
All the same, I loved this story, and can imagine it as a series of beautifully illustrated books that adults and children would enjoy.

There's lots of action in this one, and the characters are very likable. I like the humor that runs through the story. The plot line is not deep, but I didn't see some of the twists coming. If you like a linear plot with fun characters and lots of action, then I recommend it as a fast, enjoyable read.

Meet a different kind of Wizard

Jake is a bit lazy, and not very ambitious. He has had no training at all - you get the impression that if a handwritten invitation to a school for Wizards had dropped down his chimney when he was 11, he'd have turned it down because the train journey was too long and a bit boring.

From this humble beginning, Jake is built up. He continues to explore and discover his powers, while helping people (sometimes willingly, sometimes not). You get to like Jake with his increasingly complex life a lot. His slightly tangled love life provides some amusing moments, and one or two slightly steamy scenes which all serve to keep the story humming.

I'm well over the target age for this book, but I enjoyed it. The author has a great imagination, there are some unique and entertaining ideas in the story (see for example how foreign and alien languages are dealt with).

There are a few loose ends at the end of the book. I'm looking forward to the next one, I'm hooked, I want to know what happens next.

Not sure why i picked this book as it is not my norm, but god i loved it, i couldn't put it down, the thought of a Welsh boy popping off to new dimensions is hilarious in itself, but that's just what the book was, it was funny, it was serious, it was dark, did not like the abduction scenes though!! and it ended on a cliff hangar, not impressed with that... haha... will deffo purchase the next book, thank you Mr author.
