When a wolf appears in the neighborhood, and threatens the flock, Jack must draw upon every strength he has to protect his charges, both the sheep and the young dogs in his care.
The author has also managed to make the wolf, who is a determined predator, an animal who draws our sympathy, even as we root for Jack to prevail over him. Anyone who can reach the last page of this book without tears in their eyes and a lump in their throat has never loved nor admired an animal.
So, I didn't "love" this book, but it could've just been because it wasn't the type of book I'd ever want to read, now that I've fully experienced it and not just from the synopsis
This book differs from her first one where Jack and Luke meet ("Sheep") in that it has short italicized chapters telling the story from the wolf's point of view. She really gets inside the animal's head and helps us understand what he's going through as he approaches Luke's farm, sick and lonely, and pursues a meal and his need to mate. My son emphathized very much with the wolf, and it was great to avoid the "good guy/bad guy" simplicity kids are used to getting from other media. The book really opened up some good conversations for my son and me.
