After cooled, cleaning is a breeze. Pull the electric plug from the grill, then lift it off all by itself and place in the sink. I use a hand held scrub brush with plastic bristles, to clean either side it takes little pressure. Obviously don't use wire bristles, that would destroy the nonstick finish. The grill is dishwasher safe, but I haven't placed it in the dishwasher, yet. The drip pan/tray is not dishwasher safe, but unless you cooking something greasy like bacon, it cleans with very little effort.
I used it 3 times and it was great. Nice large surface, cooked evenly, yada...yada...yada.
It was just after the 30 day Amazon return policy expired so I contacted the manufacturer direct (W.P. Appliances, Inc. 800-275-8273) and was told it is not covered under their warranty since it was purchased from a "non-authorized re-seller". There is no mention of this condition in the warranty stated on the back of the product manual. Grrr...
I could have argued with them but decided to contact Amazon before raising my blood pressure.
Thankfully Amazon is an AWESOME company and allowed me to return the product after 35 days. Had it been longer I expect this wouldn't have ended well, so buyer beware.
First of all, it doesn't heat evenly. The further you get from the plug, the hotter it gets.
The grill lines transfer to the griddle surface, making lines in everything you cook on the thing.
The grease catch is the worst part about it. The grease drains through these little holes on the far end of the griddle. It lands in this metal tray that runs the entire length. This is where the difficulty cleaning comes in. It doesn't matter what side you use, you have to clean the grease off the grill side, and it's not an easy task. Then there's the matter of the metal tray. It's impossible to get it completely clean. It's just terrible.
My $19.99 el cheap griddle had a single hole in the front and the grease drained into a removable drawer thing. It was much easier to clean up. I only bought this because I thought it would be nice to have the grill side.
This thing is overpriced and crummy. I do not recommend.
First, the good points:
-The double-sided, solid aluminum grill element has a high quality non-stick finish.
-The grill gets as hot as you could possibly need. (EDIT: the side close to the plug gets hotter than the far side).
-When using the ribbed side, it leaves wonderful char marks on meats and vegetables.
-Everything we have made so far - from steaks and kabobs to pancakes has come out perfectly. In the end, how the food turns out is the most important measure of this item.
On the down-side:
-The base of this grill is very cheap plastic which is lightweight and does not feel at all durable.
-Further, it slides around VERY easily because there is no rubber on the feet. I'll probably go buy something at Home Depot in order to rectify this problem, but it should have been considered and included in the product's design.
-The shape of the grill itself is a slight disappointment as well. Rather than a logical rectangular shape that gives the same amount of room across the entire length, the long sides are rounded meaning that the center of the grill is wider than the ends. This could be considered a minor complaint perhaps, but this design just doesn't make a lot of sense. It is my understanding that earlier models of this Wolfgang Puck grill were indeed rectangular in shape. Why the unfortunate change?
-Cleaning the grill is not difficult if you have a large, deep sink. However if your sink isn't big enough to accommodate the grill top, you'll end up flipping it over and over to wash and rinse both ends. This leads to a related problem - the plastic handles on either end of the grill are hollow, meaning they'll collect the greasy water and charred bits while you're washing it. Inevitably this leads to the need to flip the grill over to rinse it off numerous times. Again, I imagine this is less of a problem if you're fortunate to have an enormous sink. Otherwise, consider yourself informed.
I want to stress that we are pleased with our purchase of this grill despite this mixed review. In terms of performance, it has been great. I just wish that it was designed a bit better to make the overall use and clean-up experience even better.
EDIT 5/30/13: This item has mostly been retired in our kitchen. For us, the clean-up is just too difficult with a small sink. This obviously wouldn't be a problem for everyone, however. Combine this with the uneven heat across the length of the unit, and we now find ourselves using Lodge Logic L8SGP3 Pre-Seasoned Square Grill Pan, 10.5-inch instead, and we are much happier.
