Top customer reviews
First, the good points:
-The double-sided, solid aluminum grill element has a high quality non-stick finish.
-The grill gets as hot as you could possibly need. (EDIT: the side close to the plug gets hotter than the far side).
-When using the ribbed side, it leaves wonderful char marks on meats and vegetables.
-Everything we have made so far - from steaks and kabobs to pancakes has come out perfectly. In the end, how the food turns out is the most important measure of this item.
On the down-side:
-The base of this grill is very cheap plastic which is lightweight and does not feel at all durable.
-Further, it slides around VERY easily because there is no rubber on the feet. I'll probably go buy something at Home Depot in order to rectify this problem, but it should have been considered and included in the product's design.
-The shape of the grill itself is a slight disappointment as well. Rather than a logical rectangular shape that gives the same amount of room across the entire length, the long sides are rounded meaning that the center of the grill is wider than the ends. This could be considered a minor complaint perhaps, but this design just doesn't make a lot of sense. It is my understanding that earlier models of this Wolfgang Puck grill were indeed rectangular in shape. Why the unfortunate change?
-Cleaning the grill is not difficult if you have a large, deep sink. However if your sink isn't big enough to accommodate the grill top, you'll end up flipping it over and over to wash and rinse both ends. This leads to a related problem - the plastic handles on either end of the grill are hollow, meaning they'll collect the greasy water and charred bits while you're washing it. Inevitably this leads to the need to flip the grill over to rinse it off numerous times. Again, I imagine this is less of a problem if you're fortunate to have an enormous sink. Otherwise, consider yourself informed.
I want to stress that we are pleased with our purchase of this grill despite this mixed review. In terms of performance, it has been great. I just wish that it was designed a bit better to make the overall use and clean-up experience even better.
EDIT 5/30/13: This item has mostly been retired in our kitchen. For us, the clean-up is just too difficult with a small sink. This obviously wouldn't be a problem for everyone, however. Combine this with the uneven heat across the length of the unit, and we now find ourselves using Lodge Logic L8SGP3 Pre-Seasoned Square Grill Pan, 10.5-inch instead, and we are much happier.
What I don't like as much is the smooth side. First time I used it, nearly a third of the griddle was significantly hotter than the other two thirds. I was making pancakes so I adjusted to that. My husband said it was likely because it was the first time I used it. The second time I used it I made french toast and it seemed to heat evenly across the entire surface. The next time I used it was for french toast again. It seemed to heat even, but it also cooled down and I hadn't turned the temperature down. In fact, I had to keep upping the temperature to keep it hot enough. Why I have trouble with the temperature on one side and not the other is a mystery to me.
I thought about returning it, but decided it was worth keeping as I can adjust to any temperature issues as I cook. Hopefully, it will stand the test of time.
Design is very nice; not much wasted space. Cooking area is generous; griddle easily fits 6 regular-size (1/4-cup batter) pancakes at a time. Setup is easy, and it's very easy to switch from grill to griddle. Drainage is good; grease, fat, etc. are captured in the pan below. Comes in handy when it's too rainy or cold to grill outside, and complements the outdoor grill, too, when we have larger groups over. If you have limited storage space, can be a bit bulky to store, but that's a minor inconvenience, especially since this is a 2-in-1 appliance.
Cleanup is a breeze, too. Cleaning the grooves of the grill isn't too difficult, and the entire appliance is easy to wash. Bottom pan detaches easily so it can be scrubbed, if need be.
Our only complaint is that the cooking temps do not seem to be as hot as indicated; we always seem to need to set the temp 25-50 degrees higher then recommended, or food takes much longer to cook. This is especially true with meat and other foods that require cooking temps of 375 or higher. (But, I'd rather it err on the low side with cooking temps.)
Overall, I highly recommend this appliance for anyone looking for a good grill + griddle combo that cooks food well and is reliable.
