This newest release by Mr. Hackett has me realizing that he is among a very shrinking group of very gifted British artists from the golden age of Progressive music who still take time to make exceptional music on their own terms. No commercial push here. No having to top the last album, but rather be able to write music from deep within. Steve has done it again in my opinion and although there are certain CD's that I do not own by Steve, this is already one of my favorites. I love the Genesis revisited CD's, but the latest release by Steve I believe have really shown that Genesis lost a major contributor when he left, although I never stopped listening to genesis either.

I see negative reviews, like all CD's will have. Listen to a sample and make your own decision. This is a very consistent release to his past 4 or 5 CD's and I for one am glad that artists who could rest and live comfortably still want to make great music! Long live Progressive music!!

Former Genesis guitarist Steve Hackett’s 24th solo studio album shows the maturity of a songwriter and musician who hasn’t forgotten his roots. All told, Mr. Hackett has released more solo albums than all the other members of Genesis combined. He is the only Genesis alumni to still re-record and perform Genesis songs, touring the world with a band of stellar singers and musicians. His solo discography speaks for itself and WOLFLIGHT is one of his finest works.

This album is a journey through contemporary and ancient cultures and the individual struggle for freedom. World music permeates the compositions while Hackett’s lyrics explore the Far East, vampires and domestic abuse, his own childhood in London, ancient Greece, Mexico, America’s Deep South and Martin Luther King, Morocco and Iceland. Primal and orchestral, Hackett’s electric and acoustic guitars are ever present. His varied, talented band and guest musicians and vocalists perform with perfect symmetry.

Essential Tracks: Wolflight, The Wheel's Turning, Corycian Fire, Black Thunder, Dust and Dreams

I am a relative newcomer to the Steve Hackett discography, with brief exposure to GTR in my formative years and only passing acquaintance with early Genesis when actively playing music. But through his friendship with John Wetton, I came to know this guitar genius and showman from his 1996 Tokyo Tapes. I own two DVD concerts plus most of his Genesis work, and I am still growing to appreciate his solo albums. "Wolflight" is a strong addition to my CD collection with emphasis on songwriting as much as virtuoso guitar-playing. His harmonies are sharp, and his intonation on the title track and "Love Song to a Vampire" make me think of early King Crimson. Hackett has indeed improved as a vocalist at this stage of his career, though one wonders how famous he would be if he had been gifted with the voice of a Gabriel or Wetton. The second half of "Wolflight" is listenable and atmospheric, but it does not quite stand out like the first half, which is unforgettable. Naturally, because Hackett's partner Roger King is the co-producer, this album has a uniformity (some might say homogeneity) in terms of overall sound. But when one does a full album, one wants a level of consistency, and Roger King is one of the most consistent players in the Steve Hackett universe. I like his arrangements, though he at times seems over-fond of certain keyboard patches. As a bonus to Yes fans, one of Chris Squire's last recorded bass performances is a highlight of "Love Song to a Vampire," which really "progs" out in the final third. Out of the body, indeed!

First off, I am a huge Hackett fan, admiring his group and solo work from Nursery Cryme onward. I feel this is among the 5 best (of his solo albums) he has ever done. It's unique in that it feels like the most cohesive of them all. It's certainly very powerful in places, incredibly well-played, and the composition is strikingly accomplished. The only criticism I think I can come up with is that there are places where a piece could be completely "played out" to a more finished conclusion. Case in point - I think "Vampire" would have been better if he had come to a conclusion more in keeping with the rest of the piece. His soloing all over the album is fantastic as always - but he could have had a solo of great majesty if he had played over the "chorus" section (repeating it a few more times at the end to allow for a solo) and then brought the piece to a close more in keeping with that chorus. There are 1 or 2 other places where I heard this - but that is a very minor gripe. It did, however, remind me that, like at the end of the original version of "The Lamia", he is capable of incredible majesty in his playing. He does accomplish this in other areas of this album. Since he has many albums I'd give 4 stars to, and since this is above most, if not all, of his other albums, I feel this warrants 5 stars.

I find the Wolflight album an interesting listening experience. It has the same style as Out of the Tunnels Mouth and Beyond the Shrouded Horizon but a lot more diversity on each track. The album almost has a soundtrack feel to a movie score. I like the album as a whole but Love Song to a Vampire is probably my favorite track. These recordings are very deep and find something musically new after each listen. This album is going to take few more listens to grasp but that’s okay I love a musical journey.
