For doing any sort of fast programming or deep mathematics, I've been using Mathematica since the early 1990's. My first usage was on a Mac Plus, calculating the determinant of a large matrix.

Obviously, both computers and Mathematica have improved since then. The big draw for me has been the thousand of online examples of many types of math, at *.wolfram.com, with * = (demonstrations, mathworld, library). For many areas of math, working code will be findable at one of those three sites.

Also, that code will often be short. Go to the Wolfram Demonstrations Project and give it all a test drive, play around with the interactive examples, and take a look at the code that generates them.

Computers today are roughly a billion times more powerful than a few decades ago. That allowed the teenager Neil Bickford to use Mathematica on the Minsky Circle problem and find hundreds of things that have never been seen before. Any math problem subject to computer attack that hasn't been looked at in the last decade basically hasn't been looked at seriously. Myself, I made the mistake of looking at the Mrs. Perkins Quilt problem, which deals with dividing a square into smaller squares. With billions of times more power than the last people to look at the problem, I couldn't help but greatly improve the known results.

Highly recommended.

Mathematica 8 is hands down the most powerful math software I've seen, and it's fantastic that they've found a price that a home user can afford. However, my main interest in math and science right now is tensor math, and here Mathematica has let someone else have the ball. Before purchasing Mathematica, do be aware that it has no tensor math built in beyond a few list functions and matrix multiplication and the like. Basically, you can do tensor math, as long as you write the whole package yourself or purchase the outdated commercial one for nearly twice the price you paid for Mathematica. Too bad. When will the day come when tensor math will be included in Mathematica?

when manipulating complex functions, or dealing with complex mathematical equations, this program is excellent. To use it for general use, it has a steep learning curve and can be too slow.
