It has basic shifter universe stuff like true mates, shifters shift naked, pack hierarchy, better-than-anything-human-sex, and such. It also has the basic woman in peril premise. Woman who says she doesn’t believe in love. Man who wants true love in a mate, man who is a virgin waiting for his mate.
All of this should add up to a great story. It’s only 8 chapters so it moves fast. But because it’s only 8 chapters I expect better proofreading and editing. Too many errors both of the grammar variety and the continuity variety.
Spoilers: the first time they have sex it’s morning (he brings her breakfast) on her sofa bed BUT she “grabs the headboard” during the scene and then the next scene has them waking up in the morning and there is a recap talking about the night before— but it wasn’t night, it was morning. Then the next scene has her on the golf cart going to get the mail at the end of the long driveway (still morning), the ex boyfriend appears right when she gets to the mailbox (um yeah right... must suspend all disbelief as to how he found her and drove up right that second) and after the big fight Edon takes her into the woods, lays down the blanket and the suddenly it’s twilight. It’s not that long of a book yet the author jumps all around between day and night, can’t keep her scenes straight, and just details like Cassie mentioning she left her piano behind at the ex’s but then when her stuff gets moved in there’s the piano.
So, yeah, it was a mixed bag. I wanted to love it, but I can only go 3 stars. Some of the dialog made my ears bleed— total bodice ripper dialog, cringed in a few places. It’s only 99 cents or free with KU and it’s an OK way to spend an hour or two, but coming on the big promotion of Dixon, Riley, Wilde, and Goode’s “Club” I would hope for similar quality between the 4 books and didn’t really feel it with this one.
At the end you also have a preview of the third, which is also a woman in peril running from a cop ex-boyfriend. We will see how #3 executes compared to this one. Coming next week.
