It opens with a quote from Rudyard Kipling - "Whether down to Gehenna or up to the throne, he travels the fastest who travels alone." Immediately followed by one of my favorite corny, old jokes - "What do you think of Kipling?" "I don't know. I've never kippled." So there - it had me right off the bat.
The artwork by John Buscema features expressive characters and moves the action clearly and fluidly. Although, I'm sure both the writing and the artwork's probably considered dated today in that the story moves briskly, there is not a lot of navel-gazing on the part of the characters, and the art is not "artsy-fartsy" murky and confusing. This is just a lot of fun dialog and action -- with a little mystery about Wolverine at the climax.
One other point, even though he's a tough little runt, Logan does take his lumps and lets you and his pals know he's feeling the pain even as he tries to stay in the game. After one fight, Jessica says, "He can barely stand!" To which, Logan, being helped up, gasps out, "I'm...m always like this before I've had m...my first cuppa coffee..." During a fight with the evil entity, Ba'al, Logan thinks, "I smell meat burning and hear screaming. Then my mind gets around to telling me that I'm the source of both!"
A jab is made at "Patch," as one by one, all of Logan's pals let him know that they knew and have known he is Wolverine, all along. At one point, Logan says, "Everyone must think I'm an A-1 loon!" to which O'Donnell tells him, "Well, you are and A-1 loon!" Even so, Logan's not stupid and he's not the poor, mind-controlled victim of some shadowy manipulator. He's using his brains and skills to again be the best there is at what he does...and it was simply refreshingly fun to go along for the ride.
