successful history professor who always found studying and writing easy compared any social interaction she might experience. Lizzie always felt that she was raised an orphan as her father barely said hello to her, her mother hated her and did everything to make her life miserable, and her one older brother went along with their mother to sabotage Lizzie. However over the years with therapy and the support of her wife Sarah Lizzie begins to possess social skills now that enable her to deal with her family, all of whom are a bit bizarre with all of their quirky characteristics and family secrets. With this as a backdrop Sarah thought it would be a good idea to invite Lizzies entire family over for a Christmas Eve dinner and some caroling after.
When the family gathers it quickly becomes a comedy of errors, if something odd or bazaar is going to happen it will. What was to be a three hour dinner turns out to be a three day catastrophe with Lizzie doing everything in her power to put out little fires in order to have Sarah have the dinner she so carefully planned.
Markinson has a way of writing characters that you fall in love with because they are flawed yet kind and loving and so very human. This was a fantastic read and given the wacky family dynamics it was hard to see what was gonna happen next. Throughout all of the drama that Lizzie and Sarah experienced the remarkable love for one another grew stronger which was a beautiful thing to see. I highly recommend this book, it's well written with lots of humorous drama.
