In Women Caught in the Conflict Rebecca Groothuis offers a careful and through treatment of the historical and sociological developments that have driven the ongoing debate between Traditionalists and Evangelical Feminists. Liberal Feminism, Biblical Feminism, Evangelical Feminism, and Traditionalism, are all discussed within their proper historical context as the author puts froth a comprehensive treatment of the attitudes, assumptions, and misconceptions of each movement. Although Groothuis may be professional a freelance writer (rather than an academic scholar) her book (featuring back cover recommendations by academics such as Richard Mouw) addresses what most theologians overlook--the cultural and societal influences that shape the trajectory of the gender debate.

Truly one of the most eye-opening books for those who are confused just how biblical the "Traditional womanhood" schema is in todays popular Christian culture. Superbly written and researched - and wonderful feminist argument against abortion.

I read this book a long time ago, and I do recommend it. Though I have never met Rebecca Merrill Groothuis, I have talked to her on the phone, and I found her to be engaging, easy to like, and willing to listen openly, not defensively.

The title of her book might be misleading to conservative Christians who worry that this book promotes feminism more than Christianity. The book itself, in my opinion, presents a clarifying set of arguments that are helpful to consider when thinking through the issue of women in ministry.

To put it bluntly, I don't like the title or the cover, but I appreciate the content and also the woman who wrote it.
Rebecca Groothuis is an inerrantist, not a liberal.

This book is an awesome indepth study of where the traditions of society have been layed on Women as God's commandments. I personally found it comforting to know that there are other christian women who are struggling with this battle. Sometimes are church services sound more like a meeting of "The He-man Woman Haters Club" (As the Little Rascals called themselves.) I think this book should be read be any female christian or non-believer to help all of us understand why MAN believes what he believes and what God actually did and did not say. I really am impressed with this book and I don't impress easily.

Happy Reading.
