'...a much-needed chronicle of the considerable contributions made by American-born or -educated women to electroacoustic music...Highly recommended.' Choice 'Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner makes a truly extraordinary contribution to music history... this extensively researched book [...] certainly will become the cornerstone for future research into the important contributions of women in the field of music technology... It is rare to read a book that so solidly fills the historical gaps, and in doing so offers such a fertile beginning for future research. Elizabeth Hinkle-Turner has made a vital contribution to music history, one of great consequence both to the field and to future women composers seeking role models and their history. This book is a must for every academic library, and a must-read for every teacher of music technology or music history.' Seamus Newsletter '... the most substantial publication to date to investigate the achievements of women composers of electro-acoustic music...Hinkle-Turner designed her text to be accessible to readers from a variety of musical and educational backgrounds, successfully accommodating several levels of expertise... Because Hinkle-Turner's documentation of womens' contributions to the genre of electro-acoustic music is unique in its scope, I recommend Women Composers and Music Technology in the United States to libraries supporting any type of music program." Notes 'With a selected discography, an extensive biography and many references to websites, Hinkle-Turner's book provides informative introductions to about a hundred women composers and offers many suggestions for further reading and listening... Women Composers and Music Technology in the United States provides a great deal of material for further research and discussion. For anyone who believes that there are not many interesting female composers, this book ought to be a compulsory read... For all those interested in women's work in electroacoustic music, this study provides an elaborate overview with many informative introductions to the oeuvres and careers of a large number of interesting women composers.' Organised sound 'No one is better qualified to write such a book: a composer herself, Hinkle-Turner is also a university computing professional and longtime advocate of women in music. These conditions give Hinkle-Turner not only the technical savvy and broad knowledge of the field required for this type of study but also awareness of and access to the composers who are the subjects of her research. ... this is the most complete and detailed account of its subject matter to date. Anyone who teaches, studies, or has an interest in women in music, modern music, or music technology should purchase this book, first to read, then to keep on hand as a reference.' Women & Music
