“Liz Curtis Higgs is one of the most amazing teachers of God’s Word that I have ever experienced. Her in-depth knowledge of the Scriptures, gifting as a communicator, and personal relationship with the Lord make her unmatched in the ability to take biblical truth and make it applicable to anybody.”
—Priscilla Shirer, New York Times bestselling author of Fervent
“Liz Curtis Higgs has an incredible way of giving us a fresher, deeper understanding of God’s Word. In The Women of Easter, she takes us right into the days surrounding the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, where we find our contemporary concerns reflected in the faces of the women who witnessed His ministry firsthand. And we see for ourselves the love of a Savior who laid down His life so we might live free. This book is the perfect companion for Easter and beyond!”
—Jennie Allen, founder of IF:Gathering and author of Nothing to Prove
“In this beautifully tender yet scripturally deep book, Liz Curtis Higgs gives us a chance to view Easter through brand-new eyes. A fresh point of view from women who knew Jesus best and loved Him most.”
—Joanna Weaver, author of Having a Mary Heart in a Martha World
“Liz Curtis Higgs is a sister of mine, perhaps the wisest and most joyful sister of them all. She knows the women of the Bible, and she loves the women of our day. Most important, she knows what it means to have a dramatic encounter with Jesus. In The Women of Easter, Liz reveals and allows us to relive the extraordinary effect Jesus had on the lives of Mary, Mary, and Mary. Through these pages you will be inspired by the insightful prose of Liz and the life-changing power of the Savior.”
—Kyle Idleman, author of Not a Fan and Grace Is Greater
“The highly gifted Liz Curtis Higgs wows us again with her insightful and delightful look at the women of Easter. This book will stir a resurrection in your own heart and open your eyes to the wonder and beauty of the cross.”
—Margaret Feinberg, author of Fight Back with Joy
“Liz Curtis Higgs has crafted a book that is unique and profound in its intimate look into the lives of the women who served Jesus throughout His ministry. The Women of Easter reminds us that Jesus has always used women to propel His kingdom in mighty ways. This book will challenge women everywhere to step faithfully into their calling with full abandon and worship.”
—Christine Caine, founder of A21 and Propel Women
"Readers of Liz Curtis Higgs’ books will not be disappointed in this latest volume....As the story unfolds, readers meet Mary of Nazareth and learn what she might have been thinking about. At the crucifixion readers see not only Mary, Jesus’ mother, but also Mary Magdalene and other women. It is interesting that only the women stayed at the feet of Jesus while he was on the cross and women who went to where he lay to find the tomb empty. When he rose on the third day, it was a woman, Mary Magdalene, which Jesus showed himself to. After Jesus showed himself to the disciples and rose to his father, the disciples went to the upper room. With them were Mary of Nazarene and other women. Were Mary of Bethany and Mary Magdalene with them? We don’t know, but there is a likelihood the women would be there. Readers will definitely enjoy this book, and the study guide at the end of the book makes it appropriate for group use. Recommended."

This small hard cover book is eight chapters long. It begins with a thought provoking introduction "A Season of Grace" and ends with study questions, notes, and information about the author. This is a Lenten book but could be read at any time. It is a book to absorb and revisit. It stayed with me long after I finished it.
I was hooked immediately. It took me zero time to get invested in this inspirational book. That happened on page one. I love the author's personal style of writing. It's like a conversation with me. She made the three Marys relatable and I felt what they were feeling. I was sad and then thrilled when I read about Lazarus. I understood the human side of Jesus better through them and His deity. He was God. I laughed at times and teared up just as many. I got angry and could hardly read the words at times. I knew the story about Jesus's suffering but it always hurt. It always will.
In this book I found a different view of Easter. I read about the women that followed Jesus. This book told how He changed their lives. How they loved and served Him. I wanted to be part of that elite group. I wanted to walk with the Lord, see His miracles, and listen to His stories.
As the words took me closer to the cross, I found myself grower stronger in my faith. Yes, Jesus did not deserve this, and yes, He did this for everyone. Even me. Tears fell from my eyes as I kept reading. I nodded my head when the Roman soldier said "this was certainly God's Son". After the tomb was opened and Jesus appeared, I rejoiced! It made me smile, really down deep in my heart, when I read Mary Magdalene was given the great honor of telling the disciples that Jesus was now alive. A woman was given such a great job.
In 193 pages I had become friends with three woman that strengthened my faith. Their stories are remarkable and unforgettable. Jesus is the one that is the heart of thus book. He is the true meaning of Easter. He is life and hope. I wanted to read more, more, more. Liz is so good at what she does. She is a gifted author, encourager, and glorifies our Lord. Don't miss this uplifting book on three spectacular women of Easter and their Lord Jesus Christ. You will be blessed beyond measure. I rated this a 5 out of 5 stars.
I could not wait for this book as I loved The Women of Christmas and I knew this book would be wonderful.
I planned to wait until Lent and use it as a guide for bible time. It stared at me from my nightstand taunting me for a few days. I read another book and ignored it. I re read Sally Clarkson blogs. But then I could take it no more!!! I stayed up two nights until the wee hours to finish it. I could not put it down. I wanted to stay with the Mary's. I did not want to leave their dedication and fearless love for Jesus. I want them to keep showing me how to live the Lord as they did.
I did not want to see our Lord suffer but I felt like I had to stay with them. I could not pull myself away.
It happens when one is blessed to read an amazing book it is so bitter sweet when you finish the last page. That is how I felt with The Women of Easter. It's not long enough my heart cried!!! I want more!!! Thank you Liz for this book. You are a treasure!!!
Only 8 chapters long and with a study guide included at the back this is a tremendous resource for walking through Holy Week and experiencing the emotion of the occasion. The intensity and cruelty of the crucifixion and the confusion then elation of the resurrection are all described brilliantly by stepping through the 4 consolidated gospels line-by-line using multiple versions to add further embellishment.
Higgs ends with the tremendous encouragement for us all that just like Mary Magdalene whom Jesus tasked with sharing the news of His resurrection with the disciples, we too are tasked with the same great news of Easter: He is Risen. He is Risen Indeed!
I can see it being used in a small group if everyone has her own copy. I got it, though, to use as background study for a pre-Easter S.S. series. Trying to use it as a basis for a S.S. series where the class members did not each have the book was not very successful. I didn't want to just read it to them, but the chapters were hard to summarize, sharing nuggets came out choppy, and coming up with ways to discuss it was hard. Could easily just be my own limitations that are the problem. The discussion questions printed at the end of the book presupposed having read the chapter, so were not very useful for my class prep.
Again, I would highly recommend as personal Lenten reading and meditation.
