This album is a no-skip gift, filled with bangers that manages a cohesive and excellent summer vibe from start to finish. Whether you're dancing in your kitchen or simply basking in the sound, "Women In Music Pt. III" on vinyl is an absolute must-have. It's a masterpiece and I can't get enough- my favorite is Leaning On You.
As kids, we have peers, older siblings, cool aunts or uncles to turn us on to great music. In the 90's, even commercial radio played great stuff (just like in the 60's,70's and 80's!)
College and pirate radio stations still play new, amazing music (corporate radio is all one company, who owns the last record company, so they pound their product down your throat, because they don't hire those pesky, unruly artists who want creative control and artistic expression! They cost too much money! They want personalities they can use up and discard while maintaining absolute sonic homogeny! THAT'S where the big bucks is!)
There are more streaming radio stations than can be imagined! So GO FIND THE GOOD NEW MUSIC! It isn't like you have to actually mine for it! Spend 20 minutes trying out internet stations until you hear something you like and run with it!
THAT is how I found HAIM! In my opinion, the best new musical act in a quarter century. Hooks, riffs, anthems, sing along choruses, heavy guitars, pounding drums, melodic bass lines and impeccable harmonies.
The songs on ALL their albums are pop/hard rock masterpieces, but WIMPIII is their coup de gras!
With this album, they have effectively rendered all of their contemporaries impotent posers.
What credentials do I have to think myself qualified to foist such a lofty critique upon all y'all? Welp... I was a touring musician from age 15 to age 45. I've written several music columns for several different entertainment publications and I've released a dozen LP's over the course of 30 years, all of which have sold remarkably well, considering their DIY, indy status.
I'm not a doctor, but I sang about one once on TV. And I say, the prescription for "there's no good music" syndrome is a MASSIVE dose of HAIM's Women In Music Pt.III (or Days Are Gone or Something to Tell You... buy them all. Right now. I'm not kidding, go do it!!)
our worldwide Scamdemic. If the band is somewhat bothered by comparisons to Fleetwood Mac, "Women In Music Part III" will probably do nothing to dispel that. This album is a pastiche of different musical styles and textures that at times, conjures up Lou Reed, Joni Mitchell, and Wilson Phillips among others. It really is their "Tusk" or "White Album" in that it is fairly experimental, and sort of all over the board musically which may bother some listeners. However, if you are ready to accept this musical hodgepodge, the experience can be quite pleasant and rewarding. In a different time, and a different music business, HAIM would probably be worldwide megastars with all the money and fame that used to entail. Danielle Haim in particular is an exquisite talent with as good a radio-ready pop voice as you will ever hear...It is a shame that live music concerts are probably a thing of the past now, as a band like HAIM deserves to bring these songs to a live setting...But in the meantime, we will have to be content with listening to this superb collection at home, and supporting any live streams the band may do.
"I Know Alone" (very fitting in the time of Rona), "Gasoline," "I've Been Down," and "Leaning on You" are my current faves. But I have no doubt I'll discover more. The beauty with Haim's music is that it all actually gets better upon repeated listens. I'd also recommend seeing them live if at all possible. This music is great through headphones but honestly is intended to be heard live with your friends. A tiny bit of Haim's "X-factor" just doesn't translate to a studio recording.
Overall. Yes, buy immediately.
