Review

“This beautifully illustrated book is a wonderful read, skilfully combining detailed rose descriptions with fascinating accounts about each rose's historical namesake.” —David Austin, David Austin Roses

“From the seductive Empress Josephine to the intrepid Grace Darling, Chapman profiles women who have made a significant contribution to history as well as horticulture. Accompanied by drop-dead-gorgeous photographs, each flower’s provenance and cultural requirements are briefly offered to further encourage rose aficionados to include these sumptuous, significant treasures in their gardens.”  —Booklist

Absolutely a wonderful presentation of the rose and the biography of the woman whom the rose was named after. The hybridizer information background is also presented. The paintings of the famous women were beautiful and many of the paintings are in the Louvre Museum. This book was a pleasure to read and enjoy. A real keeper on my bookshelf!

A gorgeous book, and engrossingly interesting not only for the roses described but for the women's stories behind the roses' names. If you're a gardener and lover of roses, this book will not disappoint.

A very pretty book. It could have been longer, included more women, and more information about both the woman and the history of the rose. I read the whole thing over two lunch hours. I wish people who write books like this realized that people who care enough about roses (or whatever the topic) to want to know for whom they were named want more than just pretty pictures and large type info. I'd rather have a complete dictionary of women for whom rose are named with basic info about both the woman and the rose. I will probably get four copies of this for Christmas from friends who know I like roses.
