Editorial Reviews
Review
“For women who disrupt narratives ― and those who admire them ― this is both a powerful volume … and a lovely survey of just under 50 women writers from across the centuries..."
—The Toronto Star
"A handsome compilation of images and short biographical essays on female writers in this coffee-table volume. ... In a world in which women’s writing is still routinely underreviewed and underrated, a book celebrating this work will always be a welcome contribution. Both those who know these writers well and newcomers to their work should enjoy this excursion into the rich waters of literature written by women."
—Publishers Weekly
"...a timely response to the ongoing lack of attention paid to female authors. ... As a coffee-table book, with full-color images of the women profiled, including Jane Austen, the Brontes, George Sand, Astrid Lindgren, Virginia Woolf, Sylvia Plath, Dorothy Parker, and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, this is a lovely project.”

I bought this as a gift book for a friend who is a writer, and happens to be a woman. The title is both ironic (Emily Dickinson is dangerous?) and serious (Mary Wollstonecraft challenged the entire patriarchy when it was dangerous to do so) -- women writers have been seriously blocked and emphatically ignored, but still managed to become widely read. Bollmann has hit on a topic that works in several directions. He does not have an index...obviously he wants the reader to go through the whole book and not cherry pick. He does some interesting pairings: Sylvia Plath and Ingeborg Bachmann. He includes Central European women who are often overlooked in the English speaking world. Also women of color. There's a foreward by a woman writer so he's evading charges of "cultural appropriation" as a man writing about women. But I find it even more interesting that a man had the empathy to understand the psychology of women writers. And he always in his short sketches comes up with intriguing facts that prompt a lot of googling. The text is light and heavyweight at the same time. Now I need to buy another copy for myself. Meanwhile I'm reading Bollmann's "Atem der Welt," about Goethe as a scientist. Back to masculine territory.

I was expecting to get a different content in the book. This is a re-edition of the book "Women who write", only with 2 more writers at the end.
I found the first edition at $4 on a different website, and it is bigger and prettier.
Good content, but I was disappointed with this edition.

I got this product printed upside down! Not to mention, there's a divot in the cover, but the upside down part is more cumbersome. I'm sure the book is lovely, and I'll hopefully be able to say so when I get a new one.

Inspiring to all readers of women authors and all women who write or aspire to write
Reviewed in the United States on November 6, 2018
This scholarly book features 47 female writers, past and present, who made a mark in literature. A short biography is provided for each, most one page, and there are full page portraits or photographs of all. There is a very good and thorough forward and introduction, as well as some lead information for the seven categories in which the writers are grouped. This is a good book to enjoy in snippets and should introduce you to some authors who are not familiar but might inspire you to read for the first time. The book is beautifully bound and would make a lovely gift for any woman who writes or aspires to write.

This is a very nice collection of essays coupled with portraits surveying women authors over a millennium. It introduced me to some new authors I now want to read. The portraits are fascinating. The author made some interesting choices to represent Holocaust writers. The final entry shows Marilyn Monroe reading James Joyce. The accompanying essay describes how it happened. Well worth reading

Bravo!! Adorei a temática!!
