Funny in Small Doses I guess

I guess it depends what kind of reader you are. Let me explain. This was funny pretty much but when I read I usually look for something I can really get into, sort of an escape for at least a couple hours at a time. However, the "irony" factor got to be not all that fun taken in large doses. If you want something to pick up and read for maybe 15 minutes or half hour this would work fine by my standards. But if you just wanna get comfortable and curl up with a good book this isn't it. There are times I guess that it would come in handy to have a "short-term" humour source like something to read during your half-hour lunch break. So even though it didn't work for me and my current lifestyle, I don't want to say it might not be "just right" for some. I'd really like to feel more positive about this book because good humor is much needed in today's crazy stressful world. Good humour is hard to come by - hoped this would be it for me but it fell short.

The title of Judy Gruen's book, "The Women's Daily Irony Supplement," is very catching and sets the tone of the book. Her humor is everyday humor, the kind most women can relate to. The incidents could have happened in your own kitchen, backyard or living room. The book consists of short essays and it felt good just reading one or two at a time. However, after reading many, the humor felt contrived and that she was trying too hard to be funny. A reasonably good light read but not a literary read. The get-up of the inside of the book could have been more refined. I liked the cover.

Too bad; I thought Gruen might be a modern day Erma Bombeck, but she's nowhere near as good. With four kids and the world as it is today she's got enough to material draw from, but somehow it's just not in her writing. What a shame. We could use a laugh now more than ever.
