Pros- lovely 3D tree with ornaments for each day. This was a nice feature because I have 5 kids and each day someone read from the book and someone else opened the ornament.
- it got us to read Bible passages each day of Advent to help prepare our hearts for Christmas.
Cons - pretty terrible writing. The author uses the words “miraculous, wonderous”, and other fanciful words WAY too much. One adjective would have done the job and it made it sound very elementary. I’ve shown this in pictures above.
- slang words used? Why? In the story of Jonah and a the whale, instead of staying “forever and ever”, the author wrote “foravah and evah”. This was incredibly confusing to my 7yo son who’s turn it was to read that evening. At first we thought it was a typo, but nope, she used it twice. 😑
-not honoring Mary as she should be honored. We’re Catholic, and believe Mary was no “ordinary girl”, so this was a major turnoff. Even in the Bible it says the angel greets her by saying, “hail, full of Grace” but the author says the angel greets her with “Hi, Mary”.
-Lastly, the book is huge! And it takes up a lot of space when it’s opened, which it has to be for the tree to be seen. It would have been better for the tree to be detachable so it could stand alone and we’d were able to close the book.
As I said. I really WANTED to like it, but around day 18 or so, we just started reading the passages from the Bible and discussing them as a family. I’ll be looking for another family devotional next Advent.
