About the Author

Greg Rucka is a novelist whose work on Batman brought fresh attention to the character and to the inhabitants of Gotham City. He won the Eisner Award for Best Story with GOTHAM CENTRAL's "Half a Life." His other DC credits include ACTION COMICS, ADVENTURES OF SUPERMAN, WONDER WOMAN, the new Batwoman adventures in DETECTIVE COMICS and SUPERMAN: WORLD OF NEW KRYPTON. He was one of the co-writers of DC's weekly series 52. As a novelist, Rucka has nearly a dozen books to his credit, including the recent Walking Dead (Bantam).

Greg Rucka is an award-winning author of comics, novels, and screenplays, including 2020’s The Old Guard, starring Charlize Theron. He is the author of some two-dozen novels, including the Atticus Kodiak series (Keeper, Finder, Smoker, Shooting at Midnight, Patriot Acts, and Walking Dead) as well as the Queen & Country series (A Gentelman’s Game, Private Wars, and The Last Run) which expands upon his Eisner-winning series of the same name, published by Oni Press.

He is the co-creator of the series Lazarus (with Michael Lark,) and Black Magick (with Nicola Scott) as well as The Old Guard stories with co-creator Leandro Fernandez. He is a multiple GLAAD, Eisner, and Harvey Award winner. His writing has included stories for both Marvel and DC, as well as penning three "middle-reader" Star Wars novellas.

Rucka was born in San Francisco and raised on the Monterey Peninsula. He earned his A.B. in English from Vassar College, and his MFA from USC. His first novel was published when he was 24, his first comic book series — Whiteout, from Oni Press — some five years later. He is married to writer Jennifer Van Meter. They have two children and one dog.

    The first volume of Greg Rucka's tremendous run on Wonder Woman including the amazing story Hiketeia. This solo story arc sees a young woman on the run from the law asking Wonder Woman to take her in and protect her, invoking the ancient Grecian tradition of Hiketeia to do so. Diana gladly offers the young woman shelter and kindness only to learn too late that the girl is being relentlessly pursued by Batman. The story is a terrific character study of both Diana and Bruce and how both approach the world and justice. Batman believes the girl is a criminal who must be brought to justice, no matter her reasons for her crimes. Diana believes the woman should be protected, even if it means coming to blows with her close friend. The rest of the volume collects Rucka's story arcs "Down to Earth" and "Bitter Rivals" in which Diana is serving as the ambassador of the Amazons to Man's World.

    The story focuses in on the staff and friends employed by Diana at the Amazonian embassy including Jonah (a new hire who acts as the readers' eyes into the embassy) and Ferdinand (a literal Minotaur who is the embassy chef). The embassy staff is attempting to roll out Wonder Woman's new memoirs only to meet resistance from members of the religious right and conservative groups who decry Diana's lifestyle and religious "paganism." Meanwhile, Diana has gained a new nemesis in industrialist Veronica Cale, who believes Wonder Woman is a false idol and must be torn down. Enter her new secret weapon: Diana's foe Dr. Psycho.

    All in all this is a tremendous read that captures the spirit of Wonder Woman perfectly. It is a treat to have Rucka's run combined into one volume, especially with the added bonus of the Hiketeia. I can only hope the rest of Rucka's run is re-released soon in a second volume as this one ends on a relative cliffhanger: the witch Circe reviving the ancient Gorgon Medusa.

    With her recent launch into the cinematic world in the last five to ten years, fans from all walks of comic collection would enjoy this volume. Not the best jumping on point for new-to-Wonder Woman fans, with the continuation of previous plot points (Diana as ambassador to the U.N. For Themyscira, old villains such as Silver Swan and Dr. Psycho, etc) and on-going character losses, this collection makes up for it by creating a voluminous mythos. Blending ancient Greek mythology with modern versions and retelling of those tales makes for a dynamic read, but can, at times , make for a less than fluid transition for new readers.

    But this isn't a "jumping on point" for readers. It isn't even marketed as such. But for those who do know Diana and the DC Universe, it is a vibrant collection that really makes for an immersive read. Fans of the series will be pleased to see the writer and artists looking at Diana with admiration and respect. Her characterization and mannerisms tell the reader that those who are creating this story love Wonder Woman as much as you. It is a great beginning to a wonderful story arc and you will want the next chapter.

    I was recommended this book by Reddit as one of the must read runs of Wonder Woman. I got into it mainly because of how good the 1st movie was. I have to say, I wasn't disappointed. If you liked Gal Gadot's portrayal of Wonder Woman then I'm sure you'll enjoy Rucka's Wonder Woman. She's every bit as compassionate and regal.

    However, this book on a whole very much serves as just introduction to Rucka's rub. It can be slow at times as it takes its time to sow the seeds for later stories. I would say the pay off is worth it having already read vol.2.

    I can safely say for anyone looking to get into WW, this is a must get. There is a lot of content and depth and you won't feel like a waste of money. Also for those afraid that WW stories are preachy or get too feministic, don't worry, you get none of that here. Diana is a bonafide hero.

    What an awesome collection. I have heard great things about Greg Rucka's run on Wonder Woman, but I never expected it to be this good. The Hiketeia story is simply amazing, no review could do justice, just know you won't be disappointed. The rest of the stories are fantastic, the art is very good, a bit cartoony but good nonetheless. If you've never read any WW stories, do not worry, this book is very accessible to new readers. Great book, great collection and great price. Go and order this book, you owe it to yourselves to do so.

    After watching the Wonder Woman movie, and hearing such good things about Rucka's work on the character I decided to check this volume out. I have not read much Wonder Woman before, but this volume gave me a new love for the character. This is not only a great story for Wonder Woman, but an incredible comic book saga in general. It honestly turned out to be one of my personal favorite comic book runs. I was a little hesitant in reading it because I have not enjoyed Rucka's Wonder Woman Rebirth stuff that much, but this book was great. The story was built really well, and I really like all the supporting cast. I was a little concerned the story would get too political, but I think in the end it struck a very nice chord. The politics were necessary to the plot here, and it did not feel preachy. The motivations for the villains were very intriguing. I loved how Dr. Psycho and Silver Swan are used in this story, and how their involvement served to raise the stakes. This is a comic book run I think every comic book fan should read. I look forward to reading the next volume.

    Greg Rucka has been doing a great job with the Wonder Woman Rebirth run. Infact, everything he does, including this run from the early 2000s, is incredible. J.G Jones' art is fantastic. Though later on, he is mostly confined to covers. The standout story is obviously the Hiketeia, featuring...yes..The BATMAN! That story sets the standard a little too high, which the rest of the collection just can't match up to(but it's like expecting every Megadeth song to match up to Hangar 18) However, it's great to see Diana as a diplomat and great to see her head chef, Ferdinand the Kythotaur(looks like a Minotaur). Also, her relationship with the Silver Swan is beautifully depicted. Highly recommended.
