Cue does so much that it's hard to know where to start. While you may balk at first by the price and it's cute simple appearance, this device is so much more. Think of it as a programmable computer in disguise. I bought it for my 13-yr old grandson as a birthday present, because of his interest in robotics and coding. In the short time we've been using this, it has never failed to delight and educate. The biggest problem is learning all it can do. It does not come with a comprehensive instruction book and I've not found one on the web yet. We've discovered its capabilities so far through the app and its website, makwonder.com.
It works is several modes and can take on several different bots, each with its own personality, The more you use it the more you discover more of its hidden capabilities (or talents?) It surprises you with how well it can interact with its humor and conversation. You can message it and it will respond, often with clever replies and jokes. And if you ignore it, it will ask for attention.
In its Control mode you can operate it much like a robot, using the joystick and controls that are built into the app on your iPhone or other device.(iPads, Androids). If it gets into a corner or stuck under a desk it will work its way out on its own.
This appears to be truly a breakthrough product that will be used for years, a result of the company's collaboration with other partners and upgradability through software.
Cue looks unique from the outset. It comes in a creative 8-sided package with a flip down plastic cover that is substantial enough to serve as Cue's "home." Set up was easy, requiring an app download. The iPhone and Cue connected immediately and the Cue talked through the process. Cue seems to be very well made and likely to take abuse. If you're looking for a special gift that will benefit the recipient, I can't imagine anything better.
Enter the new Cue Robot. He’s smarter, and cooler looking, and has better wheels and technology - with four distinct personalities.
Right out of the box the experience is very good. Everything is easy to do, step by step and other than a slightly lengthy firmware update, you jump right into the action. My son has fairly extensive experience with the Dash and Dot, so it was no problem for him to jump right into coding with the Cue robot.
If you aren’t familiar with the Wonder Workshop Robots, they are “friendly” robots that are both toys, but also powerful robots that can be programmed with a “blockly” type code that kids can easily learn. With Cue, the programming seems even more in-depth if you want it to be, and my son is already starting to find things that seem more interesting for him to do with Cue vs his old friends, Dash and Dot.
Cue is a very solid upgrade to Dash, without a significant upgrade in price - “he” costs the same as Dash and seems to offer quite a bit more.
We are very excited to see what Wonder Workshop continues to offer as the product line grows and the Robot capabilities expand and grow along with them.
These are the robots to start with no matter what age your kids are - they are built well and can take abuse, they are easy to use, but also can be programmed with a powerful language so that no matter what your children’s proficiency level, they will find fun things to do with the robots.
So overall, hardware-wise it's got great potential. If you have a kid that already has had a Dash and is ready for the next step up, they will certainly love this and figuring out new things to do with their robot that weren't available on the Dash. But if this is for a kid that has yet to learn any programming yet, this is not what you want, save a little money and get the Dash instead, for all the much better educational apps and materials that are available. Hopefully Wonder Workshop will eventually remember that they did make this robot too and start providing better apps and the actual "games and challenges" for it that are promised.
