Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

This book explores and explains scientific mysteries and principles, leavened with tongue-in-cheek humor and an abundance of illustrations. Chapters are short, but give an understanding of technology and science not available elsewhere. Questions include:

• What holds a satellite up while it goes around the Earth?

• Why is the sky (made out of clear air!) blue instead of green, or just black as night like the sky that high altitude jumper Felix Baumgartner saw?

• How is laser light different from “normal” light?

• Did Columbus really discover that the Earth is round?

• Which one invention will assuredly survive our civilization?

• Why can’t you travel back in time?

If you often feel embarrassed because you don’t have a clue about lasers, the difference between volts, amps and watts, or how jet planes really work – but you would like to understand the physical principles of our modern world, whether you’re a teen or a parent – this book is for you!

To understand the basics of quantum mechanics, or of protons, neutrons and electrons, you don’t need algebra, calculus,

or a lot of equations or technical buzzwords. Too many people have been soured on science by science teachers who have made simple concepts seem complex. This book is the antidote: all it requires is your curiosity.

Advance praise for No Wonder You Wonder!:

“From beginning to end, and with laugh after laugh, I en

joyed every single word of this remarkable book. Phipps is a hell of a good writer, and the kind of physics teacher that I would have loved as a young student. No Wonder You Wonder can be engrossing for anyone with a bit of curiosity, not just the scientific minded.” – Christophe Bonnal, Chief Engineer, CNES (French Space Agency)

“No Wonder You Wonder is a fa

ntastic book. Covering topics such as space, matter, and the energy within the universe, this book does an excellent job of clarifying these topics. It's a great read for young scientists and aspiring physicists.” – August R., high school freshman

About the Author

Back in 1961, I decided on a career in science rather than history after hearing President Kennedy announce that we were going to the Moon. I am fascinated by all aspects of science, and a specialist in optics, plasma physics and laser-produced plasmas. I have B.S. and M.S. degrees from MIT and a Ph.D. from Stanford in electrical engineering, have worked in various National Labs for many years, and later formed my own company, Photonic Associates, in Santa Fe. While I am actually a “rocket scientist,” having designed and built laser driven plasma engines for spacecraft, I firmly believe that you don’t have to complete Grade 24 to understand how things work. Ernest Rutherford said “if you can’t explain your physics to a barmaid, it’s probably not very good physics,” and I agree with that sentiment. I want to help you get over your fear of numbers and science. Read this book and see if I’ve been successful!.

I enjoyed reading this friendly and whimsical review of science history from ancient times to the very latest state of the art Science. Written for the layman, it sports a single equation (E=mc^2) and covers an immensely broad expense of topics with historical details that the reader will enjoy with a smile. The author provides numerous examples, sketches and prints that illustrate much of the physics we encounter daily and may not be aware of. I recommend it as required reading for 9th grade students in the first couple of weeks of High School physics before diving into formulas and equations. Written in the first person style, the author is speaking directly to the reader; a style usually reserved to do-it-yourself manuals.

No Wonder You Wonder!
Dr. Claude R. Phipps

What a delight to read a book on science and discoveries and laugh all the way to the end! What a delight to read a book about serious scientific facts and feel like sitting with the author, while listening to his explanations and stories. One wants to know this guy – Dr. Claude Phipps - and gets to meet him personally.

Yes, this book is rich on stories, personal and historical. It is entertaining and inspiring and gives the whole world of science a very warm and enthusiastic hue. This book is stationed at the meeting place between your ordinary daily life and the great mystery of physics, its laws and secrets. You encounter these mysteries everywhere, in nature – watching a sunset or moon eclipse, or in practical life – sitting in a jet and holding your breath, when this iron-bird lifts off the runway – do you know how it does that? Do you know that it was Louis XVI who ordered Marquis de Condorcet “to establish a system of measurement that was to be for all people for all times”? That’s our metric system, used everywhere around the globe. Do you know why satellites steadily follow their path and don’t plummet down onto our earth? You will know after you read this book.
“No Wonder You Wonder!” is a real “coffee table book” that should have its place in your living room; you just sit down, grab it and open it at a random chapter and get informed and entertained, both at once. Claude Phipps is a serious scientist who does not believe in the use of equations to explain science to lay people. He uses illustrations, stories, facts, comics, personal statements and his rich knowledge in his field. He will capture your attention and eagerness to get glimpses into the mystery of this universe.
This book is a must-read for teenagers and grown ups who want to know. It should be required reading in highschools and junior college.

Kind of an amazing textbook for the brighter kids in the class. It is not recommended as a general read unless you have time to dip in to a chapter now and then. Claude has a teenager's sense of humor and this lively book would be a welcome addition to any AP science class. The author is an internationally renowned expert in laser ablation who just might have the answer to space junk cluttering the heavens -- but you do not have to know that to read and enjoy the book. Each chapter is a non-cumulative look at a different aspect of the broad subject we call Physics, including some history as well as contemporary theory. And there is just enough math you pique your interest, so don't worry about that.

Just a pleasure to read! This book covers a huge variety of topics in a tone that is both informative, endearing, and straight to the point. Dr. Phipps has really captured a new style of textbook with this book. So much of what I've read previously takes a cup of coffee, a pen and paper, and a lot of patience to get through but this book just breezes by. I've already felt more confident and excited about the world around me from the empowering information this book has given me!

I never knew that getting information could be so entertaining. Obviously it DOES take a rocket scientist to write about complicated matter in a way that is both profound and amusing. If you have a difficult question you can be sure it will be answered with the lightness of being (a genius).
Ind if you don't have any questions - grab this book and you will wonder why you never wondered ...
